NSA Whistleblower Alleges Illegal Spying

NSA Whistleblower Alleges Illegal Spying
Former Employee Admits to Being a New York Times Source

Jan 10, 2006 — Russell Tice, a longtime insider at the National Security Agency, is now a whistleblower the agency would like to keep quiet.

For 20 years, Tice worked in the shadows as he helped the United States spy on other people's conversations around the world.

I specialized in what's called special access programs," Tice said of his job. "We called them 'black world' programs and operations."

But now, Tice tells ABC News that some of those secret "black world" operations run by the NSA were operated in ways that he believes violated the law. He is prepared to tell Congress all he knows about the alleged wrongdoing in these programs run by the Defense Department and the National Security Agency in the post-9/11 efforts to go after terrorists.

Do you remember the outrage Jay Rockefeller expressed at the leaker of the DNC memo outlining how to undermine the war?...As we speak this premeditated treason is being carried out...This is what Jay Rockefeller said about the leak of the DNC strategy of making the country look bad in the world's eyes:

“It was an internal memo, a draft. At some point, the committee and the senate are going to have to explore the chain of events surrounding this draft memo since it raises serious questions about whether the majority is obtaining unauthorized access to private internal materials of the minority.”

Get that, Rockefeller was going after the "whistleblower."...These scum will stop at nothing to regain power.

Um, the dude's name is not Rockefeller, it's Russell Tice.

Your little diatribe is irrelevant.

But mul, gotta hand it to you, you're always there for the "team."

Everything's a football game to you.

Go Team Republicans!

So anyone who calls themselves a do-gooder "whistleblower" can reveal classified info to the NYT, break the confidentiality agreement they signed and hand all kinds of free help to the enemy? Just great.

He's a 20 year employee. What makes you think he's a "democrat?" What makes you think this has anything to do with it? His career was filled with 15 years of Republican presidents.

You are so naive. If this law breaking bureaucrat was a Republican they certainly would have used that in packaging him...He is another mole rat like Valerie Plame.

Yes, Deep Throat broke the law and should have gone to jail. Imagine if we had no penalties for gov't. folks who felt like blabbing to the press anytime they disagree with an elected official. Not saying Nixon didn't deserve to be outed. But blabbing classified info IS a crime and should be vigorously enforced.

I think Cool_chick, you lack an understanding of the seriousness of the work the NSA does, and the risks to our nation's security when "whistle-blowers" do not follow the procedures for dealing with their concerns and instead reveal classified information to the press.

We'll have to see how this plays out, but I suspect this Russell Tice has motivations for his behavior that are not "good and just."

Cr@p. Some people just don't get it. I'm all for checks and balances to keep things from getting out of hand, but stuff has to be done that most people shouldn't know about and don't want to know about. It's about people thinking they understand about icebergs because they see the tip. They just have no clue.

I guess I'm just a republican, thank goodness.

I would have to agree with you with the first part. I admit, I have mixed feelings on this one. I don't know if I can agree with the second part. It is equally possible the motivations were good and just considering what happened to his career, it's possible he did try to follow procedures......

As you said, we'll just have to see how it plays out.

Go Team Republicans is just the game Mul plays...he's such a good little cheerleader, isn't he?

Nobody would sacrifice their career, and at the very least risk jail time, without ulterior motives. I guarantee there's somebody behind all of this, pulling the strings, that or the guy is disgruntled. The guy should be in jail, no question. There's stuff that goes on necessary to our country's security, and we're all probably better off not knowing.

Is that the best you could do for a cheerleader? At least post up a hot one........

The guy was interviewed last night. The way he sounded, how he talked about the NSA pre 9/11 and post 9/11....I dunno, it didn't sound sinister, but rather genuine.

I'm still out to the jury on this one. I cannot surmise either way, but I cannot close the possibility of good motives nor mental health issues.

Sorry, Team Libertarians get the hot cheerleaders.

The people that should be in jail are those that conceived and ordered the illegal spying on Americans by Americans.

I thank Mr. Tice for his courage and honesty and patriotism. He's going to need all the support he can get when the fascists start circling.

If Tice was so concerned about stopping malfeasance, he had proper channels to go through so long before he went to the NYT. Anyone in his position knows how to get the attention of higher ups. If his bosses ignored him, all he'd have to do is fire off a letter to the chairs and ranking members of the House and Senate Intel. COmmittees. Believe me, that would get their attention, keep his job protected and it would only be among people with security clearances. Handing it off to the NYT is bordering on treason. It certainly gave aid and comfort to the enemy in wartime.

First, if the Bush/Cheney administration were at all concerned about the rule of law, they too had "proper channels" to go through to spy on Americans. It's called the secret FISA Court and could not be any easier to obtain all the intelligence information they needed while respecting the Constitution.

Secondly, nobody has any idea right now what Tice did prior to going public. We'll find out I suspect.

Finally, I'm tired of hearing how disclosing this "helped the enemy." It helped keep America free.

Tell me how "the enemy" was assisted by knowing they were subjected to warrantless taps (if in fact they were) as opposed to taps with warrants.

Tell me how that knowledge that the person listening did not have a warrant possibly assisted "the enemy" in any way.
