Avian Flu--Anybody Worried?

Avian flu has now moved from China to Turkey which by land travel is a walk thru Afghanistan, Iran and Irag to reach Turkey.

Is this evidence the virus is spreading? Europe is now concerned. Should the US be concerned and have a plan?

Yes. It's only a matter of time. Thank God for living in a developed country with first world medicine. Tamiflu doesn't seem to work on this one, it'll be up to your immune system.

A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world's greatest civilizations has been 200 years.

Not sure if worry will help. If Human to Human transmission happens, it will be worldwide in a matter of days.

I work with the guys that are working the "what-ifs" for this (one of the services). They're concerned. Granted, once it makes the mutation to be infectious from human to human it may be less virulent, but looking at KIA rate in just bird to human, it's a bit scary. As Alf said, expect it to be rapidly spead worldwide...and OBTW, Tammiflu ain't the magic bullet. Bottom line, huge potential for a lot of people to die.

I think the TamiFlu failure was due to too low a dose. Nevertheless, not a good thing. My family and I are planning a trip to China this summer, but I'm having second thoughts...

No, it's the flu. With modern therapies, a repeat of the epidemic brought to America by GI's returning from europe in 1918 is unlikely.

There are other diseases being brought home by GI's returning from Iraq that you should be concerned about though. Probably not deadly, but nasty just the same.

Have been in China several times in the last few months, and very close to Turkey as well. Scared? No, but very concerned.

Its now up to almost 200 cases worldwide and more dying in Turkey now, so this is not something to overlook. How it made the jump from the Far East to Turkey this fast is alarming, and we need to get ready for its introduction to our part of the world late this year.

There really isn't much i could do about catching it if there is H2H transmission beyond than common sense hygene.

The only thing i am concerned about is being away from home when it does happen...I do not want to be in a developing country with shoddy medical care or away from my loved ones.

It spreads by migrating birds. But once (or if) this thing mutates to human to human transmission, it would travel by plane.

One of the best things I have read:
