How many times does the average person check the BBB before doing business with a firm or buying something? I would bet almost never, thus they have no real power.

Personally I have complained several times to the BBB in various cities when a sale or deal went wrong. It was a complete waste of time so do not even bother any longer...

BBB is utterly useless, just a marketing scheme...

worthless. just a money gathering organization. our parents thought they were the schnizzle, and that's what they're still running on. give me your money and we'll give you a plastic plaque to hang on your wall so everyone will think you're legit.

Come to think of it UL is there for a reason...the consumers safety. But who would bother to check if an appliance were "approved".

I would agree and disagree. I just successfully had their rating downgraded from BBB to BB. (within the last month) The only downside is that the rating system has 10 levels in which business should continue with the merchant and 2 levels that does not recommend business dealings. A system clearly in favor of the business and not the consumer. Nonetheless there is only 6 levels to go before the BBB is not on their side. I'm sure there is more than enough complaints to get the job done.

I've heard that the California Bureau of Automotive Repair has teeth. But, I don't have personal experience, and I know of no one who has personal experience (just word-of-mouth)

The BAR has major teeth. Shops are scared of them; they'll usually try hard to resolve a problem if a customer mentions talking to them.
