1996 Porsche 993 Twin Turbo / 911 Turbo Coupe 96-$25900
There is an ad that appeared on Craigslist in many of their major markets. It is vary a suspicious looking ad proposing to sell a '96 Twin turbo...photos shown...for $25900. I responded to the ad and here is the response I got. Be very careful...the next step is to send a deposit to an "escrow Company".

I'm sorry RayJay or Jeffrey Ray or whatever your name is but fellas this sounds vaugely familiar just like numerous E-bay scams from earlier in 2004 on anything from a '67 corvette to a fully loaded Range Rover 2005.. I had more than one of these guys say they had so many offers ,but would I hurry and send the 5K deposit to secure the deal ?
Wether the car is at ebay wharehouses (haha) or upper slobovia ..actually heard that to an earnest dealer isn't paying delivery or asking for your trust intercontinentally.. If it sounds to good to be true believe me boys it usually is ! Just my .02 cents..Bert

Here is more info on the scam. After my last email where I mention the FBI, he has yet to respond... Oh, by the way, I was just pushing him to see what he would say. I am well aware of the fact that a 993 TT does not sell for this price, plus all the other red flags. Just curious what scammers do to inform others..
Hello Jeffrey, Thanks for your email. Due to the large amount of scam alerts with regards to Square Trade, I feel uncomfortable doing this transaction (go to Google and enter Square Trade scam). Perhaps we can do this via an international bank such as HSBC, UBS, or Citibank? I would be happy to assume all banking costs to do this transaction via a internationally reputably recognized financial institution. My suggestion would be to use a letter of credit. I place funds in the bank which are held for you until the merchandise arrives the port. As soon as the merchandise arrives and I have a chance to inspect it, the funds are released to you. I cannot get the car unless those funds are released to you. This way, we are both protected. You are sure not to lose the car since I cannot get it unless I pay, and I am sure I get the car since my funds will only be released once I inspect it. Again, I would pay for all banking fees involved. Since this is not he manner that you wish to conduct the transaction, I would even offer to pay for the shipping, so there is no risk to you. I am still waiting for the responses to my other emails regarding the history of the car as well as its current status. If you do not wish to conduct this transaction in this manner, I can only think that this is yet another scam and would report it to the local agencies as well as the F.B.I. Looking forward to hear back from you soon, Gus -----Original Message----- From: Jeffrey Rayl [mailto:rayl_jeff59@yahoo.com] Sent: Tuesday, January 17, 2006 4:26 AM To: Gustavo O. Bergés Subject: RE: 993TT Hello, First of all, you will have to understand that these are my terms and this is the ONLY way I will do business. Here is how I want to close this deal, in the best and safest way for the both of us: for shipping we will use World Cargo Express, a local shipping company here. I have used them in the past and I am fully satisfied with their service. I will store the car under your name and address, also the title and all documents I have, and you will receive a tracking number and all the storage details. Once they contact you and you confirm that the car is indeed there, I want a downpayment of 2,900.00 USD transferred to the third party who will intermediate out transaction, which is Square Trade. SquareTrade will insure the funds and hold them until you receive and inspect the car. Once the transfer is made and SquareTrade confirms me that the funds are secured with them, I will instruct the shipping company to proceed with the delivery process. Please don`t feel offended in any way, you must understand that I am only requesting this downpayment secured with SquareTrade so I can feel confident enough about sending you the car. Shipping will take approximately 7 working days, and will be done door-to-door, to your exact location, so you will not have to pick the car up yourself. All shipping fees will be paid by me as agreed. Once you receive the car, I will allow you 72 Hrs for inspecting it. And if you find it unsatisfactory in any way other than described, I agree to have it shipped back on my expense, and SquareTrade will fully refund the payment. The downpayment of 2,900.00 USD will ONLY be realeased to me after you have the vehicle there and you instruct SquareTrade to give me the money. Also, you will have to send me the rest of the payment at that moment. So if you agree with my terms above, I see no reason for which we shouldn`t complete the transaction as soon as possible. Please reply with your full name and address where you want the car shipped, so I can proceed and store it at the shipping company for you. I also need your details so I can forward them to SquareTrade and start the process. Sincerely yours, Jeffrey Rayl

This is a typical scam. They tried this crap with my dad on a 964; needless to say, once we got a shady response, we backed out of the deal and saved our money.

Saw a thread for an M3 recently on bimmerforums, exact same thing. When the buyer emailed that he would have his brother check out the car in person, the seller said that he wouldn't let anybody look at it without a deposit. Yeah right. Do people still fall for this crap?
