Turning 40 today. Second half better?

40 years old today. In midst of life.

All of you, older than me, does it get better or worse after 40 ?

cool_chick 01-20-2006 02:57 AM

I'm sure it gets better......

Pros:

- confidence that comes with experience
- money to do the things you want to do without worry
- wisdom to make good choices
- appreciation for loved ones

Cons:

- crickety bones
- prostate issues
- gray hair

For men, con #3 tends to be a benefit, so that could be another pro in your case!

Live, laugh, love.

Happy birthday Livi.

Happy birthday, Markus! :)

I've got very good news for you. Life does indeed begin at 40. Or whenever your midlife crisis subsides. You'll have all the patience you always have wished for. Your perspective changes. You see how things work.

I'm finally getting into the dating world after a bazillion years of marriage, which ended a couple of years ago. I'm very pleased to find that we mid-life fellas are in pretty sharp demand. Even among much younger ladies. It seems as though confidence and maturity and patience are sexy. I think I'll start taking better care of myself. This is really starting to get fun.

And BTW, Cool, I've heard similar reports from ladies. I don't know where you are in life's timeline, but the forties are just plain cool. I've seen your pic and it looks like you have about 20 years to go before you reach this threshhold. (Boy, and I going to take some ***** for that remark)

Happy Birthday, Markus. I recall some of your recent comments and all I can say is to just tough it out. It lasts a couple of years or so, and then it all smooths out. You're going to like this.

Joeaksa 01-20-2006 05:21 AM

Happy Birthday! It gets much, much better. You are more confident and hopefully are set in life and you can do as you wish in many areas.

Would not be 30 again for anything, having the best time in my life. One thing is that the men tend to age a bit slower (and better) while the ladies do not do so well. Put men and women of the same age together in my bracket and sure am glad to be a guy.

Happy Birthday!

I'm less than a year away from 40 myself and have huge changes in my life going on, all for the better. Reached a point where I can think about everything that has happened so far and learn from it. Looking forward to the next 40.

GF thinks I'm a big kid and I love living this way.

targa911S 01-20-2006 05:34 AM

Happy birthday!

It absolutely gets better after 40 and 50 I might add so you don't have to dread that one either. You pass the point of aquisition, pretty much have yourself established in life and carreer, and you have a "piss off" confidence level. It's a good time of life. Enjoy it.

VINMAN 01-20-2006 05:45 AM

Turned 40 last yr, nothin changed so far. Then again, I dont allow myself to age. Physically or mentally( especially mentally!):D
As long as everyone keeps telling me to grow up and act my age, I know i'm doing the right thing!!
Honestly, for some reason I took 30 really bad. was in a depression, thought everything was over. Ended up only getting better.:)

Happy Birthday!http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/wat6.gif

Happy Birthday, Markus!

A little word of advice I learned way back when I was in my 20's that seems to become more important with each passing year.

"Always try to be childlike, but not childish." It will keep you young, no matter how old you get. :D

The last 3 post are on the mark. It's quite fun and getting better.Happy Birthday Markus. Adopt the 'I could care less" attitude about the unchangeables in your life, and laugh at yourself and others.

Happy Bday.

Don't you know 40 is the new 30? Well, probably not quite. (Just something some 40+ SWF dreamed up)

Life is great after 40.

I agree, I'm a much happier guy than I was 20 years ago.
Only thing about passing the big four oh is you better start taking care of yourself (if you haven't already).
You have now entered "use it or lose it" mode.

dhoward 01-20-2006 07:54 AM

Happy birthday.
And no.

No, I maintained physically for another 15 years passed 40, not counting the presbyopia (which started when I was about 46), then the ache's and pains started. Still, in my late 50's, pretty active, and can run a mile or so before being winded, but if I do something like cutting down a tree with an axe, I'll know I over did things by late evening.

Life is sweet though, savor it always.

Teutonics 01-20-2006 08:26 AM

Happy 40th to us! I turn 40 today also... let's hope it's not downhill from here!

So when do I start feeling like an adult? :p

Moses 01-20-2006 08:34 AM

Honestly? My college years were perhaps the best. Loads of free time, surrounded by similarly directionless peers. A wonderful, but painfully adolescent time.

I squandered my 30's by working 80+ hours/week.

I'm now on the north side of 40 and having the best time of my life. I work a lot less. Last year I logged 3 full weeks of vacation with the guys, fly fishing in Alaska and Belize. Golf trips to Vegas, skiing in Canada. I also had 3 weeks of vacations with my family and several 3-day weekends away with my wife.

I will continue with this approach till my body or my money wears out. :D

Turning 40 today. Second half better?

NO:(

jyl 01-20-2006 08:50 AM

My 40th was 3 yrs ago.

Based on just 3 yrs or being over 40, I'd say that as long as you stay in good physical shape and you are well-established from a career and financial standpoint, the 40s seem to be fine. I don't see that it is "better" than the 30s, but its not "worse". Your mental and physical abilities aren't greatly different from the 30s, give or take a little hair and a few pounds.

One negative is that we do live in a youth culture and you can't avoid references to 40 as being "old". TV characters are always moping about being over 30, etc. So, you ignore it.

Another negative is that if you are making a change of direction - starting a new career for example - it is tougher. That's the situation I've been in. But hopefully you are tougher and wiser too, so it can work out fine.

My comments are only for men. For women, I'm not sure.

P.S. Remember that James Bond was 35 y/o in the first Ian Fleming novel, "Casino Royale", and 45 in the last, "The Man With The Golden Gun". And he seemed to be doing alright. So I figure you can hope to keep your Double-0 license at least into your late 40s.

My 40th was five years ago - started my own business. You just don't bounce back like you used to but keep trying to just the same.;)

vash 01-20-2006 09:39 AM

as i understand it, the second half has a really schitty ending.

i turn 40 this year :(

VINMAN 01-20-2006 10:46 AM

I think the biggest secrect to being happy is to keep doing the things you have always enjoyed. No reason to stop just because you get older.
I still do everything I did in my teens and twenties. (Bike, scuba dive, ski, rock and ice climb, etc.)

Only thing that has degraded on me is my "partying" recovery time. Takes an extra day or two!:D

oldE 01-20-2006 11:18 AM

Happy Birthday!

I really enjoyed my 40s and am liking my 50s even more. Life is a gift. What you do with it is up to you.

Livi,

I have 40 almost nine years in the rear-view mirror: you have a great decade ahead.
The journey is the key.
One last thing(s): do two things every year.
- Try something new
- Enjoy something treasured

singpilot 01-20-2006 01:50 PM

Livi.

40. BTDT. Was great.

50. BTDT. Better.

Happy Bday!

schamp 01-20-2006 02:37 PM

IMHO being over 40 is great. Its all what you make of it anyway. There is no reason for any of us over 40 and for sure 50 for not having an AFLAC policy. My .02. No connection. Cheers and enjoy.

azasadny 01-20-2006 02:54 PM

Happy Birthday! Considering the alternative, getting older is great!!! My last 4 years have been the best, watching my kids grow into young adults and being married to a wonderful woman definitely help!

Racerbvd 01-20-2006 04:36 PM

I turned 40 back in August, was out playing on my G&S skateboard today:D

I will turn 49 in February and last night I got drunk on wine with friends and watched a Ren and Stimpy DVD.

BEAT THAT!

goat 01-20-2006 04:42 PM

Turn 40 this April!!
Can still beat up the young guys on the bike.
I hope it will be a great second half.

targa911S 01-20-2006 04:44 PM

pwd72s 01-20-2006 05:20 PM

Yup...it gets better! At 40, life was full of business worries...worries I no longer have. :D

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MARKUS!

Glad you made it this far! Despite your recent post about not being completely happy, I wish I was in your shoes!

I'm afraid it does get a bit downhillish from here unfortunately. If I could trade my body for a 20 year old's, I would definitely do so, but only if I got to keep my 43 year old brain!

Enjoy the best part of your life and be content!

snowman 01-20-2006 11:22 PM

Yup, the big 40. One step closer to the grave. Happy Birthday.

But just wait for the big 50, you will have forgotten the big 40, if you live that long.

Howard Agency 01-21-2006 12:01 AM

40 sucks, 50 is good, 60 rocks. Grandkids, $$, now if I can just figure out where I left my keys....

cantdrv55 01-21-2006 12:26 AM

Happy Birthday Doc!

I was very depressed about turning 40. I heard that's when things begin to fall apart. Now that I'm 42, I do believe I feel aches and pains more now than ever before but nothing that Ibuprofen can't handle. I am having the time of my life though since I finally have some fun money. I look forward to retiring at 55 so I can crank up the fun meter 24X7.

HardDrive 01-21-2006 12:41 AM

40?

pfffffftttt.....bunch of young bucks.

When my father turned 50 he set the worlds record in his age group (4:38, the sob was 50!), and did the Chicago marathon in 2:51.

madmmac 01-21-2006 03:01 AM

Age is really just a number, not a state of being. You are as old as you want to feel and act. My wife still calls me the "Big Kid" when relating incidents and accidents around the house to her friends, and they all know who she is talking about.

Aging is part of the wonderous cycle of life, each with it's own positives and pleasures to behold and experience. Graying hair and reading glasses, who cares? Have I not earned them?

To compare one decade to another is cheating yourself out of the enjoyment of each and again focusing on a number. There are a lot of times when I have to really think what my age is when asked...no I'm not that old, but it really is a mindset that I have. Make it what you want out of it.

Mark Twain said: Happiness is a Swedish sunset -- it is there for all, but most of us look the other way and lose it.

Take time and enjoy the ride---Wishing you many more B'days.

EDIT: See I almost forgot....I'll be 50 this year, I think, I'll check my license to make sure.
