Why is the engine spooled up to the level to suck a person into it when passengers are boarding?

Happens fairly often on aircraft carriers, or did a few years ago.

Airlines have things like this happen often, but usually not with people.

While I was on the Nimitz, they showed us an old film of flight ops where a member of the ground crew was ingested into the intake of an F-14 that was taxiing to park after returning from a sortee..and nobody noticed!

A few minutes after they shut down the engines and walked away from the jet, the guy worked his way back out of the intake. It seemed that his float coat (inflatable life preserver) caught on a pitot tube in the intake and prevented him from being run through the "meat grinder".

Quite a video!!!

And here is why you need to have a "swivel-head" whenever you're on the flightdeck. Never stare in on direction for more than a second or two....

How deep is the intake on an A-6? Seems like you'd have half a chance with something like that..

I'm not sure I understand your question correctly. The intakes on an A-6 are just like any other intake....they reach all the way back to the engine.

If you were thinking that maybe the guy could have grabbed ahold of something to prevent being completely sucked in, it wouldn't work.

In this film, figure the guy weighed close to 200 lbs, 150 at least. Look how quickly he was snatched up off his feet. Even if he were some kind of bodybuilder, with muscles of steel, his reactions would have to be so quick, not to mention the amount of strength it would require to stop his body from suddenly moving so fast.

I practically lived on the flight deck while I was on the Nimitz. The experience is quite exhillerating. Especially when they have ALL the cats operating. Especially working the port side of the portside bow cat. There is a small 'safe' area that moves, depending on whether they're launching the bow or the waist cat. They actually kinda intersect, so you're constantly on the lookout. One false move and you end up worse than the guy in the second film I posted...the aircraft on the waist cat is moving at speed by the time it gets to where you are.

One thing that Randy does not mention is that while these guys survived, I doubt that their "micky mouse" ears remained on their head and they were probably deaf for life after that.

The engine on most of these airplanes is between the cockpit and the tail, usually 10-15 feet aft of the nose and takes its air from the duct which runs under or beside the pilot. Its normal for a crew chief to get inside this duct and shinny down to inspect the turbine blades and check for FOD but someone is always on watch to make sure that someone does not spool the engine while someone is down in its belly.

Its a dangerous place on a carrier deck. Getting sucked in is only one of the dangers. Putting the JBD's down (jet blast deflectors) can catch someone off guard and blow them off the deck and into the water. If someone sees it happen they MIGHT be found. There was a case of a guy being blown off deck in the Indian ocean a few years back and he was picked up by a fishing boat a day or two later. Very lucky guy as most of the time they are gone forever...
