Houston area sightseeing

Last minute business travel puts me in Houston this week, with some free time on Saturday before heading back to the airport.

Any suggestions on what to see or where to go? I'm carless, and must rely on cabs or public transportation, but more than willing to head anywhere that comes reccommended.

Vin

Houston isn't exactly a tourist city. It does have a good section of resturants (except Chinese) that are very reasonable in price.

Golf is good right now, cool temps and low fire ant populations. If you like shopping, head over to the Galleria (Post Oak and Westheimer). Wine, I can tell you a few good choices.

Where are you staying?

They put me up at the hilton southeast, which doesnt seem to be in the nicest part of town. Did have a nice conversation with a strung out homeless guy sleeping on my way to pick up a few bottles of water from a convenience store last night. He kept mentioning how I reminded him of his mother, which all 6 feet 4 inches and 240lbs of me found troubling.

The Galleria is looking promising. Guy in the office mentioned a tour at the space center, but it looks to be a 45 minute cab ride and a 3 or 4 hour commitment.

Any suggestions on a place to eat near the galleria?

Thanks!

Vin

Galleria is nice. If you have a car and want to drive you can head over to the Galveston boardwalk for some killer seafood (I recommend Guido's). Keymah boardwalk is also nice (on the way to Galveston). Houston itself doesn't have much to offer. The Space Center is pretty cool but that's about it.

Places to eat near the Galleria...hrm. Well there is an awesome deli called Kenny and Ziggy's, my wife and I used to love to eat here on Sunday afternoons. Sandwiches are HUGE though so bring a doggy bag! There is a nice Italian place nearby called Maggiano's (I think it's actually a chain but it's still good). Morton's steakhouse is also near the Galleria, good steaks there.
If you can get into Ruggle's that is a great restaurant (although it isn't exactly by the Galleria). Prego's in Rice Village is also quite nice (Italian).

'Americas' is very nice, and about 1/2 a block north on Post Oak. Very good food and a nice wine selection.

It is across the street from the Hilton on Post Oak.
