Nuclear Weapon Effects Calculator

With N. Korea a threat, and Iran working dilligently to develop their own nuclear program, I thought this might be something you might want to take a look at.

No, I'm not being paranoid, it just seemed to be ON topic with some of the current events of the day.

Coming soon to a city near you...?

There has been a lot of talk about nukes on the forum lately.

That Calculator only goes up to 4 KT...

I thought there were nukes up in range of 50 or even 80 KT

I also heard that a suitcase nuke would likely be 1KT (which is still huge)

Yup! Kinda my motivation for posting it. Let people put it all into perspective.

As far as the slider, try just typing the numbers in. Like turbo6bar said, mine goes all the way to 4 Mt.

Littleboy was about as small as you get, 15 KT. Anything smaller means it was an ineffcient bomb, or designed for some other effect (neutron radiator).

Remember, Hiroshima was destroyed with a 15KT bomb. Nagasaki was destroyed with a 22KT bomb. PRNK is making Plutonium bombs. Iran is making Uranium Bombs. U235 bombs are easier to make work, but the material is harder to producer (Isotope separation). Plutonium bombs are harder to make work (Critical to Super critical ratio lower) but the material is easier to separate (Chemical reprocessing).

The Megaton bombs the US and Russians have are Hydrogen FusionBombs which use a Fisson trigger. PRNK and Iran are not likely to develop these anytime soon. The fission bombs do have an upper limit as you can have only a certain amount of critical mass around before the nuclear reaction goes critcal.

ANYWAY, the Federation of American Scientists (FAS) is a well known anti nuke group.

Well, the US has a large, if not the largest, arsenal of Nukes.

I wonder why when I select "Washington DC" the nuke is targeted on something in lower Southeast, instead of the White House, the Capitol or even the Pentagon (which is actually in Virginia). Interesting story - I was told by a guy I know who was an Army Colonel that during the cold war, Soviet nukes were targeted specifically on an information kiosk slightly-off center in the middle of the pentagon. Funny how precise the targeting is/was given the effects.

Guess in the scheme of things it doesn't really matter, would all be destroyed anyway.

I have heard that story myself.
It's a snack bar. They have pretty good hot dogs and cokes in the summertime. They have a bunch of adirondack chairs the DOD employees sit in during lunch and often fall asleep. It's pretty funny.
