Hamas terrorists elected leaders of Palestine, peace hopeless.
http://edition.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/meast/01/26/palestinian.election/index.html
So the Palestinians have elected the suicide bomber-supporting Hamas party rather than the more moderate, peace-pursuing Fatah. This after Palestine gaining the West Bank recenty. I'm beginning to think people in that area (including the Israelis) actually desire bloodshed and will fight until every last person is dead rather than pursue peace. We spend over $20,000 on EACH Israeli man, woman, and child EVERY YEAR (including interest on the debt we borrow for this aid) !!! Plus we give millions to the Palestinian authority as well, which is now in the hands of terrorists. Yes, that's right, we're now directly giving millions to a group that wishes the end of the nation that pays for its existance. Peace will never work in this area. NEVER. There is no hope. And this is coming from someone who holds great hope for Iraq and other ME nations. I say we cut all funds to Israel and Palestine and let them settle their disputes once and for all. They will either kill each other off or learn to get along like decent human beings. Last edited by jkarolyi; 01-26-2006 at 12:31 AM.. |

Am in the area and everyone is having kittens. No one expected Hamas to win this number of seats, only to get a few and upset the "apple cart" a bit.
Israel, the Europeans and USA have all said that they will not work with terrorists in this govt, and everyone considers Hamas a terrorist organization. The Israeli's are in an emergency meeting, the Palestinian cabinet and leader (Abbas) just resigned and its going to be very interesting for a while. Hope things just stay quiet for a while until the dust settles... Joe A

What an interesting development!
From what I hear/read, to the Palestinean voters, Hamas represented not so much terrorism, but the end of Fattah's culture of corruption. This certainly makes sense, since I have a hard time believing that the majority of Palestineans would be in favor of many more years of intifada. I think there's a lot of potential here. If Hamas takes this result as an endorsement of continued terrorism, there will be a brief (or prolonged) bloodbath. More likely--I think--is that Hamas will get to work trying to build a government. Nevermind what they said on the campaign trail, right now they have a people to govern. You can go from sadistic militant to responsible politician and caring leader of your people. Look at Sharon. |

Well, its getting nasty now. The Hamas people are forming outside the govt HQ and just stormed the building to put up their flag in place of the old one. Shots fired and lots of ambulances.
This could be very interesting... Joe A

I can imagine the transition will be nasty. Like trying to get Gore out of the naval observatory in 2000.

I needed to clean the computer keyboard anyway..... This IS going to be interesting.... A democratically elected terrorist organization. Condie is not going to be able to straighten this out as easily as she straightens her hair. Thanks Jon, you made my day. Joe, you keep your head low over there. |

As reported on Al Jazeera:
The slogan of Hamas is "God is its target, the Prophet is its model, the Koran its constitution: Jihad is its path and death for the sake of God is the loftiest of its wishes." Wow. First the Iranians elect a holocaust-denying, nuclear bomb-pursuing, USA and Israel destroying hard liner, and now this. Kind of makes you wonder if the majority of Muslims really are a peace-loving people as portrayed by the international media. I think this proves otherwise. |

Len,
Watching it live on TV now, ambulances all over the place and those idiots firing AK's in the air everywhere. They forget that the bullets that go up in the air have to come down somewhere. As well saw it live where the Hamas people were storming the building, ladders on the side and putting the large green flags on the top, then the black and white checkered head scarf over the Fatah plaque on the outside of the building. They want power and they want it now. Michael, thanks and heading out to Northholt tomorrow. Glad to get back to London! When you coming on duty? Joe A In the West Bank, Hamas and Fatah supporters scuffled Thursday outside the Palestinian parliament building when Hamas supporters attempted to raise the green Hamas flag. Shots were fired into the air, observers said. The scuffle came as thousands of Palestinians celebrated the election results in Ramallah and Gaza. http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/meast/01/26/palestinian.election/index.html Clash In Ram Allah, Hamas and Fatah activists clashed at the Palestinian parliament on Thursday after Hamas won the elections, witnesses said. A Reuters witness said the trouble started after Hamas members hoisted a green Hamas flag at the entrance to the building, and Fatah supporters tried to tear it down. Shooting briefly erupted during the melee, witnesses said. At least two people were injured but it was unclear whether they were wounded by gunfire. Police said there were no serious casualties. Several windows were broken at the parliament building by stone throwers. Palestinian security forces rushed to the scene to try to disperse the rivals. http://english.aljazeera.net/NR/exeres/45C9C349-9BAA-4ECF-BD02-F37B93226C24.htm

I have Fox News on in my office and they have not shown any footage though they have been discussing it all morning. I wonder if they even have an agent over there???? They may have to wait for Al Jazeera to gift them a feed.

I get BBC here in the slip in SoCal on the DISH. Is the only real news available in the States. Am watching it there. Sorry to see this, so much progress was being made, all of it painful. Was in and out of TelAviv all summer, seeing the effects of the withdrawl firsthand (albeit from behind the scenes). Could still hear the mortars crumping at night up in the heights thru the open sliding glass doors on the 15th floor.
I drew an 'on 4 hour call' thru the 9th. Nothing so far (5 days so far), haha. Love it when that happens following a 12 days off.

Why do I get the feeling that Israel and the Palestinians will be in an all out war inside of a year? Bad juju brewing here IMHO.

I'm sorry, but I don't care what religion you are. But if you are praying to God, a prophet, or whatever and they say murdering and suicide is the way to salvation? YOU ARE PRAYING TO THE WRONG PEOPLE!!!!
I say we pull out now, don't sink anymore money over there to rebuild, aid, or anything. Did we get ANY help from them after Sept 11? NO! Anyways, pull out and put all the money towards our security, and the people here. Then put stricter punishment for people trying to "sneak" in. If someone wants to live or goto school here then go through the process or forget it! It would've been nice to see Osama Bin Laden swing though.

Rush just made a good point... Now that Hamas is the official leadership of the palestinians, any attacks they commit will be acts of war from the nation of "Palestine" to Israel, and would make Israeli retaliation even more justifiable. I don't think this is the worst thing that could have happened, because up until now, they've been hiding behind a guise of wanting peace. Now, it's an official terrorist "state" run by terrorists who say in their mission statement that they want to push the Jews into the sea. Doesn't get much clearer than that!

No more naive leftist assumptions regarding the motives of the Palestinians. They don't want "peace" -- they never did. They want to wipe Israel off the map. Clarity is liberating.
