Whew hew!

Now, can we get some of the laws (going back to FDR) that have overextended the reach of the federal government declared unconstitutional?

You might get some of those annoying civil rights laws rolled back, but as part of the package, the powers of the Executive will be expanded.

Does this mean that John Kerry can resume his skiing in Switzerland? Boy, was worried about the snow melting for him...

What are Ted Kennedy and Diane Feinstein going to do with all the hot air they had saved up for the threatened filibuster, I wonder.

Oh, I forgot. They have the ability to expel it at both ends simultaneously.

If you recall my pledge of a few weeks back, I'm going to hoist a pint of my favorite ale this evening in celebration of the Alito confirmation. Then, for good measure, I'm going to have another -- standing in for you -- in further honor of Alito.

Is this really any reason to celebrate? Was there that much doubt that he would be confirmed?

I am reading this post thinking that maybe I should celebrate because there is air to breathe.
While I personally may not agree with him, I fully expected him to be confirmed.

Never really much doubt about it. Nothing glaring in his resume. And I sort of trust judges of that caliber to put their personal prejudices and religion aside. It takes time to get to that level of maturity, but I suspect most of them have done that.

The "saving of the courts" was a HUGE factor to insiders last election. We knew this was coming and if Bush did nothing else but get these two on the court we would be happy.

The chance of Kerry getting two liberal moonbats on the court would have been a massive and crushing blow to the Republicans. So yes, we celebrate.

I think crowing is a bit premature. Eisenhower's Warren and Bush I's Souter come immediately to mind.

What may be an interesting test for him is that it only takes 4 justices to vote to grant Certiorari for any case taken to the court. That's one of the reasons no Second Amendment case has been heard since 1938. Maybe one will be granted cert with Alito's arrival, but I'd not be hopeful for a clean decision. Those of the ruling elite won't disassemble federal gun control easily.

Just a question; are you opposed to abortion, and believe in limitless executive privilege, government secrecy, lessening of citizen's rights, torture and the complete obliteration of the distinction between public and private interests?

Loyal republican or not, Alito is a states rights conservative's worst nightmare.

Some of you make me sick.

And that was possible with a Republican Senate? I don't think so. They would have to have been moderates.

No, we are for proper application of the law regardless of outcome. For the record you only mildly upset my stomach.

Like Roberts and Alito.

I mean, what sort of person did you expect Bush to nominate? It could have been much, much worse. Think Ashcroft. On balance, the left (and center) shouldn't be too upset about Bush's impact.

And, as many have pointed out, who knows what these guys will become once their power and invincibility sinks in.

The man from RI knows what he's talking about ...

Ordinary people like, um, EVERYONE on this board, are the big losers with this guy on the Supreme Court. You'll see.

Well he did nominate that woman!?!

And Kerry would have nominated moderate judges also.
