Reccomendation on my "other" car
Hey guys,
My 911 is my fair weather driver NOT my daily driver. My daily driver is an 11 year old Volvo 850 turbo SW. It's time to replace the Volvo. Question is, with what? I am looking for a 4-5 year old "sport" sedan. It would be mainly used for commuting back and forth to work in and to take out an occasional client. I Looking to spend no more than 15K. If you could choose, what would you choose to compliment your 911? Thanks. -Mike

How about an Audi A4 quattro with either 1.8t or 3.0l V6? They are nice and if the weather stinks you have AWD. The other is that Audi is a relative to Porsche in a small manner of the VW ancestry.

I've heard the 5 series BMWs are nice and that their straight 6 is especially bulletproof.
I loved the LS400 Lexus sedan that I had, but it isn't really a "sports" sedan. That was bulletproof. Doug

If you look at Audis, take a look at the S4. An early one (2000-2001) could be had in your price range, if you look carefully.

just be careful with the S4s. Make sure that the turbos are in good shape. They were known for failing because of the way the oil fed into the turbo. 2002 and after were fixed for the problem. See if the oil lines have been fixed or turbos replaced. They had such potential for high hp so many of them were chipped. Just have it checked out by your porsche wrench if you don't know much about the car. I am more in tune to VWs and Audis. It will take some time for the Porsche on a mechanical level.

I would look to BMW 5 series. Be careful about the audis. Their brake rotors will put you in the poor house. My wrench says they are very expensive to work on. Got to remove half the car to do anything. Good luck.

there rotors are wearable so they will have to be replaced with the pads and they are expensive, however i am getting about 115k miles to a set so overall not to bad and with 3 speeding tickets just last year, lets say im not driving miss daisy to get that kind of brake wear.

I've owned BMW's and they are great cars, but not inexpensive by any stretch of the imagination. The Subaru WRX STi has raised my eyebrows a couple of times on the street and autocross

Audis are simple to work on. The A4 isn't bad because it is an inline motor. I haven't heard any issues on brake rotors but to each his own. My ex-brother-in-law, who is a mechanic on German cars, calls BMW (Bring Me Work). They are great when they work but electrical and mechanical issues have plagued them in the last decade or so. But then we all have had our run-ins with lemons.

I've had my 03 Maxima as a daily since new. 45k miles and nothing but oil and filters. Plenty fast, plenty practical, very reliable. It just needs a little more soul.

My wifw and I test drove a 2005 Audi A4 1.8T yesterday. Nice ride but I'd rather hold out for a 3.0. What the hell is the"Ultra-Sport" package?

5er BMW. I like the older E34, but the E39 is a nice car also. V8 6-speed with the sport package. You wont be jonesing too bad for the 911 driving one of these. The BMW wagons are nice also.

Ultrasport package is a package availablein 04-05 A4s in both the 1.8t and 3.0. It included 18" wheels, sport suspension, special front and rear bumbers, aluminum interior trim, perforated leather steering wheel and shift know. It basically makes the car look sportier and more like its big brother the S4

5 series , Infinity I35 , Maxima , Altima 3.5 , 3 series .
In that order . I would stay away from an Audi thats out of factory warrentee (or close too it). They are prone to costly repairs and are very slow . At least as far as the ones in the 15k price catagory go . Audi is not Porsche . They do ride just as nice as a BMW though . But the similarity ends there. I dont think they even come close to measuring up to a BMW . And the resale value of used audi cars ... OUCH ! Dont get sucked in thinking you are staying with the Porsche mark . Because it is not . Thanks for everyone's input! It just dawned on me that there was one other benefit for the BMW, the Pelican forum and store for BMW!
