Coretta Scott King DNC rally

Quote:
Speakers seized on the presence of President Bush to attack his policies on Tuesday at the funeral of Coretta Scott King, the first lady of the U.S. civil rights movement.

Jimmy Carter, one of four presidents to speak, took a jab at Bush's domestic eavesdropping program during six hours of sermons, speeches and song for the late widow of Nobel peace laureate Martin Luther King Jr., assassinated in 1968.

The 10,000 mourners also heard the Rev. Joseph Lowery, a civil-rights leader, cite Mrs. King's legacy as a champion of racial equality while launching barbs at Bush administration policies on Iraq and health care.

Mrs. King, 78, died on January 30 of complications from ovarian cancer. Her funeral at a Baptist church in Lithonia, Georgia, drew a "who's who" of the political and entertainment worlds and the U.S. civil rights community.

She was due to be buried alongside her husband at the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change she founded in nearby Atlanta.

With Washington debating the legality of Bush's domestic eavesdropping on Americans suspected of ties to al Qaeda, Carter drew spirited applause with comments on federal efforts to spy on the Kings decades ago.

"It was difficult for them personally with the civil liberties of both husband and wife violated, and they became the targets of secret government wiretapping and other surveillance," Carter said.

Former President Bill Clinton, a favorite among mainstream civil rights leaders, offered a teasing hint of the possible presidential candidacy of his wife, New York Democratic Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, who stood smiling at his side.

We know the Democrats have no decency, but have they no shame?...First they turn Paul Wellstone's memorial into a 3 hour Democrat pep-rally, now Coretta Scott King's 6 hour rally?

Disgusting.

Besides the disgusting display and use of a dead woman for political gain, what did Mrs. King do anyway, to warrant such Presidential treatment?...Was it the franchising of her husband's speeches, contributing to personal wealth that deserves the honors?...I just don't get it.

Mul,

The major reason that everyone was there was for votes. Some, were there out of respect for her and what she did, but the majority, especially the vocal ones, were using it as a platform to reach the minority vote. Plain and simple and doing it at a time like this shows what type of people they really are.

For both groups, they never did anything wrong, it's always the other guy's fault, they overlook their own failings to a degree that is truly incredible, and their relationship with god translates into divine right...no matter the real-world result or how far against "the Word" their actions really go.

Nice reply, Shaun. From your well stated point of view, it is patently obvious that, "Ya got nuthin!"

What does your reply have to do with the topic of the post. Nowhere did anyone say the Republicans were perfect. What has been pointed out was the seeming trend of the Dems to use ANY public venue to politic.....ESPECIALLY a funeral. Personally, for EITHER party to do something like that, I find to be quite reprehensible.

Shaun, am I to take it from your post that you believe that obvious political comments were appropriate at a memorial service for an acknowledged civil rights leader?

I heard what Bill Clinton had to say. Rush couldn’t even criticize him although he did make a sorry attempt at it. That article is an excellent example of why I do not like the Washington Post. The ****e that spews from that paper can only be compared to news SMUT.

Hal, this is what I think on the subject. I'm not sure if this is important info, but I see funerals as truly joyous occasions where you celebrate the life of the person and wish them well to whatever is next. CSK being a political figure, yes, celebrating that huge part of her life and repeating HER message is entirely appropriate, especially respectful of who she was, what she was all about.

At a neocon funeral, I'd be happy to hear great speeches about the democratization of Iraq, or at the very least the installment of a radical Islamic government with close ties to Iran.

Funerals are all about celebrating achievements

A time and a place for....disrespect?

Wow! There truly is nothing in the world that cannot somehow be tied to Iraq/Bush/neocons. We used to play Five Degrees from Kevin Bacon, but Bush took all the fun out of it. He can link anyone to anything anytime, anywhere.

Shaun...after you catch your breath, please head across the river to Boston University and talk to anyone who's been there several years. Ask several of them what they think of Mrs. King and see if you see a pattern.

Most of them are raving liberals by the way, so you won't be able to blame it on the neocons.

Well, Bush and Bacon both have been on SNL, though not together. Fred Thompson can easily be linked to Bush, since he was John Roberts Senate liaison. And Fred Thompson sure has been in plenty of movies that have some link to Kevin Bacon.

Look, Bush was responsible for the Genoese sailors who brought the Bubonic Plague to Europe. Bush put Ivan the Terrible in power. He started WWII, he started Korea, he started Vietnam, he planned Katrina. There's no end to his outrages.

When 'Ol Billy got up there and was all, "Let's not forget, there's a woman in that casket," he actually showed a hint of decency. He knew what effect Wellstone's Memorial slash political rally had, and he knew that the CS King Rally was about to turn into the same thing, so he tried some damage control. I thought his speech was good, they always are. He was born to talk in front of black people in a Baptist church.

I thought it was hilarious to see him and hillary back to back. The contrast was amazing.

That is quite a reach dude. It strikes me as a problem with some from the Left that it does not occur to them in the slightest that this would be considered a distasteful display. I thought Mr Bush behaved quite well, I would have likely walked out if slightly veiled attacks were aimed at me at such an event. After all, he does not need to get re-elected, and the Democrat:Republican ratio was minimum 80:20, probably closer to 90:10, not like he would offend anyone that had any plans to vote for him anyway.

He did not though, and the Left would not understand why. (Evidenced by their use of any event to further their interests, sort of like your attempt to turn a thread about a funeral into one about how neo-cons are like islamic terrorists, or Nazis, what day is it Nazis?) Simple respect for the woman and the somber tone the event warranted. You can sing her favorite song, or have her favorite band at the wake, if you want to do the "Celebration of Life" thing, which I also think would be appropriate. I have always felt the sorrow you feel when a good person dies is more selfishly motivated; you will have to do without them

Shaun, no argument in your reply. I am just trying to understand where you draw the line on decency. Are you cool with the political comments / barbs directed at W at that event?

Absolutely not. Celebrate her achievements, her message, her life, but not at the expense of others.

hmmm. seems like I hit a little too close to home with my insensative response to Jason's first post, which I thought so completely ignorant and disrespectful, seemed like a good post to test my recent theory.

Looking forward to the West Coast waking up.

Hint is right. He took the stage like a rock-star, obviously relished the more than out of place reception, and like a giddy school girl intoxicated by the attention he proceeded to turn the spot-light on himself for nearly his whole speech and then for a second or two on his Hillary. You would have thought it was a fundraiser (which it was) and Coretta Scott King was being honored for lifetime achievement...What it was was opportunism by the DNC and their black handlers...If we were in the ME, or Africa, Bush would have been necklaced and his wife raped.

Thankfully for the Democrats that the media is in their back-pocket. If this was a Republican display...ohhh boy!

Clinton certainly has a way at funerals:

Ron Brown's. I am sure his death was quite a relief for Mr. Clinton.
