Shaun, if anything, I think Mul's excerpt is more generous to CSK than the full article.

Your focus on the Coretta aspect of my larger point only serves to divert.

That is true. The editorializing didn't interest me, the facts did.

The Politics of Death

The American liberal once again demonstrates his good taste, timing and tact – not to mention his temperament for leadership –by turning a funeral service into a platform for political fulmination. Of course, in all honesty, one can understand the temptation of opportunity: a pulpit, a packed congregation of ideological confreres in an exalted state of reverance and readiness, and of course the dead body as a reminder, if only symbolically, of mortal sacrifice to the great cause. Truly, the perfect setting. This could really turn out to be quite a schtick for democrats. Of course how it plays in Peoria may be something to consider. But when has such a vulgar consideration troubled passionate and dedicated minds? No, I’m sure they can hardly wait for the next old liberal warhorse to make the ultimate sacrifice for an afternoon of Bush bashing. I mean, who could doubt the worth of such a noble “undertaking.” So, let the word go forth from this time and place: all you old liberal icons, step up – and drop dead. Your party – if not your country – needs you!

I don't cut and paste. And she gets the spelling of "reverance" right. But thanks, I'm flattered.

When someone like Armand Hammer dies, or Bill Gates, or Donald Trump.....then you neocons will have a life to admire and discuss and celebrate.

MLK and his wife CSK made different choices than the above listed gentlemen, and while it would be inappropriate for neocons to celebrate concepts like diversity and compassion, it would be similarly inappropriate for liberals to celebrate a life devoted to greed.

When you guys are at those guys' funerals, you can throw mud at MLK or any other supporter of social issues and programs. We'll continue to point out that your "king" is wearing no clothes.

I think the leading "neocon" (whatever that means beyond its use as a shopworn pejorative of the Left, who originally coined it anyway) made the most eloquent and admiring speech of the day. And the issue isn't any imagined slandering of MLK (though I can see the value of that as a distraction from the crassness that took place), it is the exploitation of his widow's death.

well put, but it is buzzes and pops to a liberal, it is like speaking Greek to an Italian, they both wave their arms a lot, but nobody gets anywhere.

The conservative icon who springs to my mind is Ronald Reagan. His death and funeral were blatantly exploited by the Right, so what business do they have criticizing the Left? Wait, I disremembered that. President Reagan was treated with respect when he died, not like a political opportunity to be exploited.

A speech that is being shoved down the memory-hole as we speak, as so many of Bush's heart-felt and eloquent offerings...Rest assured, Bush's next stumble will get full court press. Just a simple excerpt of that opportunistic coverage will speak for itself, as the public has been trained to think "Bush is stupid" at the ring of a bell...Maybe, if the editors are feeling especially frisky after underhandedly focusing on a flub, the very next blurb will announce the number of casualties or make reference to Halliburton.

Apples and oranges. Reagan, by all measures, was truly a great President, deserving of the best America has in rememberance...Even if Reagan's funeral was not exploited, which it was not, it would have the appearance of being exploited.

I guess I should have stated the other side of that coin. I love to rile up the lefties and the holier than thou moderates...I must say I achieve that goal quite smashingly.

How funny, we actually agree on two points here.

What do you think about the juxtapostion of the Democrat versus Republican speeches at the Coretta King/DNC political rally?...You must admit that Bush was about the only class act of the bunch.
