Going to a symphony - what to wear?

Wife is taking music appreciation class and must attend a symphony and write a critique. I, being a good and supportive husband, volunteered to come along (yeah right). Anyway, what does one wear to these things? The venue might be a little hoity-toity (UC Davis Mondavi Center for the Arts). Can I wear jeans and a sportcoat or slacks, jacket and tie or combo of the two? This is a serious question by the way. Wife doesn't know what to wear either.

If indoor, a suit sans tie would do you fine, and a nice dress for the wife. I've been to few and a symphany are generally not for the jeans and t-shirt crowd. Outdoor would be a little less formal depending on the location.

Comfortable enough, but not so much that you fall asleep - which for me is a real danger. Jacket, no tie. Slacks, no jeans.

Consider a wool mock turtleneck under a sportcoat or blazer with slacks. Classy and comfortable. The Mondavi center, being in Davis, is not nearly as formal as San Francisco, so you don't need a tux or anything. Have fun!

Navy or black suit for you, white shirt with modest tie - she should wear heels, that lil'black dress (backless) with a string of pearls and earings to match, hair up, silk shawl if she has one - no big if not. The trick to keep your attention and her even hers - don't have her wear any undies! All night you will be thinking about it and it will keep you awake. She will glow because she will feel sexy. Maybe on the ride home you can live some teen age years again!

One can never be overdressed for the symphony. Wear the nicest clothes you have, if you own a tuxedo, wear it.

Its funny, cannot understand why none of the liberals said to go dressed as Sheehan did, in a protest t-shirt while trying to make a statement. Personally would wear a tux...

Whatever you damn well please. You're paying to be there are you not? Then they shouldn't ***** about how you're dressed.

Cantdrv - I live just a couple miles from Mondavi. It's not as formal as big-city venues, and there will be lots of UCD kids there who don't own suits. Still, I'd go with at least slacks, tie and sportcoat, or suit if my wife were getting really dressed up.

Sportcoat and dark trousers with a white shirt always looks nice and is comfortable.

Well I can't make it after all because of work schedule. So, my son will go in my place and he's going to wear my blazer and slacks. Thanks everyone for the advice.
