Ravens- How do you get rid of them?

Hi,

Mining the collective brain trust of PPOT.

My dad lives up in Eastern British Columbia and is having problems with ravens. They seem to enjoy picking at the window and door seals on his house and in the process ruining them. He tried a baiting food with rat poison, but apparently they were too clever for that.

Besides covering the seals with unsightly strips of wood does anybody have any tips on keeping the birds away? His neighbors are having the same problem too.

THANKS!

Invite Dick Cheney up for the day, and to bring his scattergun. Tell your neighbor to stay indoors while Cheney is outside.

Now I know PETA might object, but this just happened last week on the dock.

The marina has a service that 'manages' the varmits. Usually is a small box with bait of some kind under the ramps down to the docks, with openings. Varmit comes in for a meal, goes off and is 'managed' somewhere out of sight. One pesky 'varmit' refused to be 'managed' and stronger measures were required.

Old-fashioned spring-loaded (non PC) baited trap was installed. The only thing it managed to 'manage' was a Raven. The reports were that this bird screamed loudly for 20 minutes prior to escaping the 'management' device. Every other Raven for 3 miles took flight, and have not been seen since.

Somewhere there is a cure for your troubles. You just didn't hear it here, pardon the multiple puns.

In town, pellet pistol or pellet rifle. In the country, a .22-250 or .220 Swift does the job.

A couple of well trained hawks should do the trick.

To Alaska natives the Raven is a religious figure. To me they hassle my lab and cat. They are annoying and trash diggers so maybe you can get some help from the health department. Check with animal control before doing anything though. Use of a pellet gun or bb gun and poison bait, within city limits for many cities, might land you in trouble with the local law enforcement.
Good luck.

Call up Dick Cheney. He'll take care of them for ya. Just make sure you get your dad some body armor.
