Talking Took the wife to the range today!

Yep, my 'rebel girl' actually asked to go. I took my S&W .22 target pistol, a Colt 1903 in .32 ACP and my Springfield Arms 1911A1. She shot about 150-200 rounds from the .22 and 1 magazine from the Colt. She didn't like the recoil of the .32 so I kept her away from the .45.

She was very nervous at first, especially with the other people around shooting. Just before she shot for the first time, she said:" James, I think I'm going to faint!" She did great and now she can't wait to go again! Woo-hoo!

Next, she'll want her own gun!

Let her try the .45 next time. The .32 is a lightweight frame and that makes the recoil seem more. The heavier the frame the more stable it is. A good starter pistol for a lady is a revolver in .38 special with a 4" or 6" barrel.

If she does not like the .32 then she really would not like a .357 or .44 magnum! Those puppies kick like no tomorrow. Have also seen someone with a Thompson Contender (single shot pistol) chambered in .45-70, the long range rifle caliber. Can only imagine the kick from that puppy...

The Colt 1903 is not light! She just needs to work herself up. At least I proved to her that she could pull back the slide on the .32 if needed.

The Colt needs a new barrel. I have 2 1903's. This one is a type III probably from the 1920's. The other was made early in 1904. The earlier one is very accurate. The later one needs a new barrel; rifling is almost gone.

I had to coach my wife not to talk about going to the range to everyone, because, even in Texas, there are quite a few people who do not like, do not understand guns.

She is the 2nd person I've taken to a range to find out that the way guns are portrayed in the movies are exaggerated.

Brady is so full of $hit, it's downright scandalous no one calls her on it. My company distributes some of their press releases and I am just awed by how wrong they get it. They make up their own facts and the media just cuts and pastes without question. Anyone who got their anti-gun beliefs as a result of Brady's efforts is severely misinformed.

Everyone that shoots my 03 Colt in .32 wants it. It's such a friendly gun. I had an 08 in .380 but I traded it this weekend for a Colt MK IV 80 series govt. model in .380. Sweet. Factory nickel finish with ivory and unfired. My new carry. Smaller than the 08 more punch than the 03, and very handsome.

I just bought a Colt MK IV series 80 in nickel too! I just got the upper and sent it off to be refinished. I'm having it fit onto an Essex frame, adding a beavertail and a few other goodies and in a week or so, I should have her back.

I would like to have the 1903 type I and the 1903/1908 Type I (380) refinished, but they are both early models and I'm concerned about reducing the value.

Without a new barrel, the 380 is about useless.

I've found that two genuine tactics work in this case.

1. First question to ask, "So you are for reduced freedom for citizens, and enhanced power for government?"

2. Second question to ask, "Why are you opposed to the basic right of self defense?"

You can phrase those in your own words, and there's a very good website for her to view, if she's willing, unlikely, but if she is:

Oleg Volk's A Human Right is worth showing her. It's very powerful.

Mr. Volk is a surviving member of a Russian jewish family that was mostly destroyed by both the Germans and Soviets over the course of 30 years. He immigrated to America in his late teens IIRC, and attended post secondary school here, and is a professional photographer.

Here's a sample of his work:

I have a barrel for you. Brand new old stock. It's not even finished so you vcan either blue it or plate it. Does your .380 have the bushing? I didn't think the 1908 had that. Mine didn't and it was made in 1926. As far as reducing the value. Who cares if it's not NRA 99% it's not considered collectable anyway. It's your gun do what you want. I did. Take a look.

Mine is a .380. From what I understand rare in that cal. made in nickle that's why I jumped on it. Sounds like yours will be sweet when it's done. I would like to have a magwell done on mine so my big monkey hands don't hang off the end of the grip.

It is an early one with the barrel bushing. I'll take it anyway, since I can swap it into my later model .32.

How much $$$

It sounds like you've gotten her started properly with the .22 -- it's the best way to learn!

I have to ask:

How hot of a round were you using in the .32? Is the recoil spring in good shape?

If she's shooting properly she shouldn't find the .32 much worse than a .22. Have you had her practice with the gun unloaded to learn to tighten her arm muscles -- especially in the wrist -- and just moving her trigger finger to pull the trigger? Is she leaning forward into the direction she's shooting?

With the proper stance and good muscle control, I would think she should have no complaints with the 1903.

The Spring is probably a bit weak. Loads? Standard FMJ range loads. I have her working with a 3 dot site on the .22 and the COlt uses the old iron sites. Don't worry, she'll work her way up. My planned carry weapon for her is a Kel-Tec P-32.
