A little surprised here, even though I know NASCAR is not the board's favorite form of racing.

I just thought the Tony Stewart deal was a little much, AGAIN. But. like last year, this was probably my only stock car race that I will watch. Some things die hard and watching the Daytona and Indy 500's are like that for me.

As bad as they've become.

I didn't watch the race. The only NASCAR race I watch is the one I go to in Joliet.

Stewart should have been brought in for a little "talk" after dive bombing the 17.

Johnson should have been DQ'd in quals for cheating, but then they would piss off a big advertiser.

Daytona needs the banking reduced and get rid of the restrictor plates before someone gets killed (again).

Watching the end of the plate races is a little tense, but otherwise the racing is boring. If I sit down and watch a Nascar race, I fall asleep every time. Only time I can fall asleep during the day is with a race on.

HardDrive: have you ever been to a NASCAR event? They're really quite something. Yes, the cars are fast, and "no," the stands, at least at the California 500, aren't teeming with rednecks.

Not even that fast. The bikes are running higher top speeds than NASCAR and CCS (club racers) race Daytona in the rain too.

True, but motorcycles don't run bar to bar in packs of 40+ for 3 hours, either.

After the mess things will string out like any other road racing where full course yellows are NOT used to eliminate someones hard earned lead.

MC racing is truly exciting and some of the best racing on the planet. But, I like to take in all kinds if I have the time and opportunity. Some 1/4 mile dirt track once in a while can be a lot of fun.

Any race in person is better than on TV, but you need to go home after the race and watch all of it to see all you missed.

But, yeah, the NASCAR boys go at it pretty hard for what it is. It has been explained to me that the cars really don't have much of a solid feel to them at 190. They move about a whole lot and you can't really see anything from the seat. I drove one for 5 laps on one of those R Petty deals. I had a lot more respect for the talent after that experience.

No question, the drivers are good at their aspect. Crossovers don't do that well, as we've all seen. Each is the best in his field. If those boys weren't as talented as they are. they would be replaced by sports car drivers or open wheel driver in a heartbeat. Stock car pays damn well and would attract anyone that can handle the car.

So, no examples about Micheal Shu driving the pants off a Dodge, OK? There are exceptions or there wouldn't be rules. I'm sure he could pick it up in a race or two. But, most can't.

I went to the NASCAR race in Michigan years ago and I have to say, the party until the race and the party after the race were a lot more fun then THE race. Yea, the cars and the live action are nice to see, but I'm looking more for the cutting edge of racing, and NASCAR is not it.

I'm not ashamed to admit I'm a big NASCAR fan. I like all forms of racing, but NASCAR is one I follow closest.

As for "plate racing" at Daytona and Talladega, I agree with the guy I heard relate it to a typical basketball game. The first 95% of the contest doesn't matter and usually they're about tied. So just play the last 5% and get it over with.

I am not a Nacar fan but I have found that good stock car racing can be found cheap at your local dirt track. I find it very entertaining and good racing without the PC do not offend anyone bs. Some of the pit high jinx are truely Jeff Foxworthy/cable guy and Mike Tyson-ish all rolled into one. Did I say it's cheap too. The track near me really tries to keep it family friendly in the stands.

I love racing my Porsche in local club events and I enjoy most forms of auto racing including NASCAR.
I enjoy Formula One except for the arrogance of some that believe it is the only pure form of racing.
Schumacher as great as he is has said The 500 Indy is too dangerous.
What John Force does in a 1/4 mile is well beyond the capabilty of all but a very small and well trained few.
Exciting racing in person is the World of Outlaws. To harness that kind of power on a dirt surface and actually race. Man that's something.
World Rally, those guys are simply nuts. Flying down a narrow dirt road with trees, boulders, and monster drop offs, what a thrill.
Sure watching Daytona with 3500 pound cars bumper to bumper at 180 miles per hour, may not have the visual impact of a dirt car sideways or a funny car over 300, but just think how you would react in freeway traffic at half those speeds.
To look down your nose on most forms of auto racing we all enjoy simply demonstrates a lack of knowlege of what is actually happening before your eyes.
It is unfortunate that some seem to feel unless it is a Porsche or Formula One Ferrari on the track it is not worthy.
To each his own. Just don't knock the other guy. It does you no honor.

Well this one in particular was hard for me to sit thru. Seemed like there'd be 10 minutes of racing, a crash and then the re-start 10 minutes later. Heck the race didn't even come down to the wire . it was finished under a yellow wasn't it?

Milt - I don't think this is entirely correct: many of these guys come from open-wheel racing, specifically karts.

Jeff Gordon came directly from "open wheel" with sprint cars and dirt track racing.

Tony Stewart raced in CART, IIRC.

Going way back, Mario Andretti drove F1, Indy and stock cars.

No dis-respect to NASCAR, but I do like to watch it now and then. I guess I'm more pissed off at the same old stuff like," they changed the camber and made a track bar adjustment" every time I see a race. How many 'track bar adustements" does it take to get around Daytona? Its nice to see many more drivers who can talk and make sense in one sentence.

And, Jeff Gordon did far from embarass himself in the Williams. However, we're not talking him entering a race with MS or MS trying to drive a stock car like Pruet and Fitipaldi did.

I really think these stock car boys (and I mean boys, the average age of the top ten a the D 500 was pretty young) are specialists and damn good. the days are gone when Mario, AJ or Gurney can hop in and run at the front after having spent most of their careers in open wheel cars.

BTW, it took Tony S a couple of seasons to "adjust." Not so much with Gordon. He may be much better than any of us really know.

Yah! And Schuey would have his hiney handed to him by Stewart or Gordon. Race driving is more nerve than anything else. Yes, F1 or NASCAR is a specialty, but once one has nerve to take either to the limit in competition, I truly don't think one is especially different from the other.

BTW: I think Schuey tried a NASCAR once. Something tells me it was at Talladega.

Hoot! There's a town in Oregon named Boring...you may have just designed their new logo. It would put some excitement in Boring. To stay on topic...I watch Nascar. It's racing, and it's fast becoming the ONLY racing. Greg Biffle is from Vancouver, WA..so I'm kind of trying to become a "fan".
