My friend just bought a blue '99 M3 Dinan and we went for a drive through the twisties today. His car is really nice, no doubt and so is my Porsche. I really like my Porsche (I'm emotionally attached to it!) but the constant things that need attention are starting to get to me (the rattling while driving, non-effective defroster, other little things). I talked with another friend (not a car enthusiast) and said that me selling my Porsche would be like selling "myself". I guess I just want the luxuries and the power combined that the M3 offers. Another thing that is coming up is college... I really need a reliable car for college. The Porsche has been pretty reliable so far, but you never know when it can leave you stranded, being a 30 year old car. Ahhh, so many conflicting emotions

probably won't get loads of 'buy the m3' from this crowd..lol. have you considered selling and buying a carrera or c2? the c2 would especially have more creature comforts.

Keep the 911 and buy a cheap modern car for college if you need to (pick up a cheap E-36 BMW and have fun tricking it out). I had a 240Z in college and I sold it because at the time I did not have the funds or time to fix all it's problems. I wish I had kept it in storage so that later on in life I could enjoy it. If you own your 911 free and clear, just keep it. Later, you will be happy you did.

The M isn't exactly reliable either and it's still depreciating - by the time you get into it it'll be broken radiators, a arm bushings, all kinds of things. If the drivetrain is sorted out on your car I'd drive that instead.
By the end of the following year you'll wish you hadn't. rjp

Not sure where you are going to school, but you usually do not have to drive much if you live on or close to campus. Get a good bike ![]()

Thanks for the replies. guess I just needed a good 100 mile drive and putting some sweat into the car to enforce my decision. Also, I was on the freeway in traffic today and an older lady pulls up in her Cadillac, honks, and yells "that's a nice car!". I don't think I would have gotten that driving an M3. So, as for now, I am going to keep the car... oh and I got the horn fixed

If you can afford college without resorting to loans...I say keep the car.
But if you absolutely need loans (for both the car and college), I'd seriously think about selling. You can always get another Porsche later on. As for the ladies commenting on your car...I get just as much, if not more compliments in my Miata, than my P-car. Actually, a lot of the girls I know prefer the Mazda!! |

If you have to ask, then you need to buy the BMW.

There's better stuff out there than Dinan.. FYI. You have a sweet 911, keep it.

Dunno about the reliability issues you refer to with the Porsche. I just jumped in my SC (RS project) and drove 1200 miles at well over the legal speed limit and the car did not miss a beat. And this was after sitting for over a year and only driven short distances. The only issue I had was a hot starter that would not turn over, but a bump start and I was off. That was my fault anyway, I knew the issue existed and would probably occur after a long drive. If you maintain the car and take care if it, she'll take care of you. I can tell you that you will hate yourself if you sell the 911. Besides, every college ********* drives a beemer. Stand out from the crowd, man!

Matt, if I lived in CA with your nice, salt and snow free roads I would drive my Carrera every single day. Its as reliable as a M3 and far more sensational driving experience (as you well know
![]() But thats coming from a desperate guy, having to plow around in a Jeep all winter. Longing for spring and Porsche time.
