Allegedly?

What the hell is up with the news?

There was a bad accident here yesterday. A truck driver hauling a load of wood lost control of his truck on a bridge. All the wood fell over the side onto some poor guy's car below, killing him.

The news reports it like this: A truck driver hauling a load of wood allegedly lost control of his truck on a bridge. All the wood fell over the side onto some poor guy's car below, killing him.

No he did it on purpose. They do this all the time...anyone know why? It's pretty apparent to anyone but an idiot that it happened. It's not like people have no idea who was driving....

I looked the word up in dictionary.com:
Quote:
Usage Note: An alleged burglar is someone who has been accused of being a burglar but against whom no charges have been proved. An alleged incident is an event that is said to have taken place but has not yet been verified. In their zeal to protect the rights of the accused, newspapers and law enforcement officials sometimes misuse alleged. Someone arrested for murder may be only an alleged murderer, for example, but is a real, not an alleged, suspect in that his or her status as a suspect is not in doubt. Similarly, if the money from a safe is known to have been stolen and not merely mislaid, then we may safely speak of a theft without having to qualify our description with alleged.
Any lawyers here who can explain this overuse of the term....is it really necessary?

So, according to the dictionary, the reporter claims he was told this incident had happened but he had not yet had time to verify it ? Maybe it never happened..

Allegedly; in the top ten of misused words, I'm almost sure of it.

The driver "allegedly lost control" of his vehicle.

Seems an apropriate useage until and unless it becomes clear that is what indeed happened. Maybe he lost control, causing the wood to fall, maybe it fell for some other reason. Maybe he was sitting still and the wood fell over because it wasn't secured properly.

Not right to pin the blame for killing someone, even accidently, if you don't know all the facts.

Rankings are in:

Ryan: 9 points. good use of current news, clever.

Z-man: 1 point. I mean just how much can you blame on one man, plus that's Jason's horse

Len: 4 points. cute, but not really all that clever.

Back to work.

The online article uses the term "apparently"... broadcast said "allegedly" and it was different on other stations...

Different connotations of the same concept:

Allegedly gets used a lot with crimes – “Smith allegedly robbed the bank.”

Apparently is a fudge term – “Smith apparently has had some issues with the law in the past”

Supposedly is the same thing, but a more loaded term – “Smith supposedly mailed the check yesterday”

Same church, different pew

C'mon, Shaun - you gotta give me at least 2 points - 1 point for the Bush's fault part, and 1 point for the use of Allegedly.

And I should get 5 points for Rodeo's reference to me being able to close this thread if someone wants to sue someone else...

And if you don't gimme those points, I have Cheney go hunting with ya...allegedly, he's good with guns...

I'll guess that they said alledgedly because if he was DUI it was not an accident. It will become a crime that he is responsible for.

...or if they discover that he was racing a MB SLR at the time.......
