"Big Love"...... Is anyone in the LDS upset about this series?
First off, it was pretty good (Series premier last Sunday). I wonder if anyone in Salt Lake City is worried about the flak.
Was surprised by the soft porn aspects, but being an adult single male, didn't bother me. Would have been uncomfortable watching with the parents or kids in the room. Showcased several aspects of the polygamists' lifestyle. Some of the modern-day issues. I flew for a long time with a member of that sect. He reminds me a lot of the Bill Paxton character in the series. In fact, his assessment was almost as the series says... 'It's not for everyone...' I was surprised at the extent and the depth that the relationships were presented. Almost like a dare to be critisized. I know that the church, and sometimes just the elders are involved in business deals, and the abuse of the young girls in some sects, but to have all of that presented in the series opener was pretty remarkable. There was a caveat about the main LDS outlawing polygamy a long time ago, but we all know it still thrives. If you missed the opener, I think itplays several times this week on HBO. |
I was surprised about the show. i didn't know it was about, well, what it is about. Found it to be more serious then advertised. Looks interesting. Sounds like the main character is in for some tough times. Perfect follow up to Sopranos too! :)

I thought it was very good and sucked you in right away. Man, I do not know why ANYONE would want 3 wifes, one is enough for me thank you very much.
It looks like it will be another HBO home run. |
Jon Krakauer's Under the Banner of Heaven is an eye opening account of a violent crime born out of an extremist faction of the LDS. Very good read.

For instance, none of the three beautiful wives in the show are 17 years old, and none of them are the lead character's stepdaughter. None of them were forced to marry the guy by the village elders. According to Krakauer, that's the norm, not the TV fantasy I saw for 15 minutes before changing channels. |

I work with a few Mormons. They all have a great work ethic, they don't drink booze or coffee and they don't cuss. They all seem real Gawd fear'n and for the most part on the surface seem to be pretty straight up - I don't know, sump', don't seem right.
Will say one thing, anybody who trys to have more than one women to deal with in their life is either nuts, misguided or has the Gawds help. Big Love has fulfilled the void created by the departure of Carnevale. |
I flew with a very devout Morman for a long time and dated a Mormon girl for 6 months. Just cannot get around the religion and the way that they operate. Still like the lady but cannot see myself working with her and the church.
Michael, would love to see the series but doubt that they get HBO in Lagos... :) Joe A |
I read Krakauer's book and thought it was just amazing. How about the little girl whose dollhouse included rooms for her future husband's other wives?!?!? I will fly to Vegas this July and drive to Phoenix and I really want to stop and see Colorado City on the way. Krakauer really got me interested in that out-of-the-way place.

You know what they say about Mormans; you can never take just one fishing. He'll drink all your beer.

Unless you bring along a second Mormon :)

That's like the old joke:
Religion is all about recognition. Jews don't recognize Jesus, Protestants don't recognize the Pope, and Baptists don't recognize each other in the liquor store. Of course you could replace Baptist with Morman, Muslim, etc. |
Don't trust anyone who takes anything too seriously...including themselves or their God.
