Saddam's trial: what is it they don't want us to hear?

As Saddam continued reading from a prepared text, the judge repeatedly closed his microphone to prevent his words from being heard and told him to address the charges against him. Saddam ignored the judge and continued speaking

I made no mention of Bush, no judgement of Saddam - I'm just curious why they won't let anyone hear what he has to say.

It's not "us", it's the Iraqis. Saddam is trying to incite more violence. Just like here, if I demanded a group commit violence and had a reasonable expectation of it happening, than it would be suppressed.

But we were told that Saddam was universally hated by Iraqis; as such, why would they feel compelled to do his bidding now that he's locked up?

The phrase "might incite violence" is the new "for the children"

I'm surprised Saddam hasn't had an 'accident' while in captivity like Slobo.

I would assume whatever he is saying is simply not relevant to the charges against him. He may be trying to "fillibuster" the proceedings, or get his point of view out one last time, or recount his great achievements, or... I think it is well within the authority of the judge to limit his ability to turn this into something other than a trial on specific charges. Who knows; I'll wait for the Michael Moore expose'; we'll find out then.

If that was the case, why only snip certain parts? Or anything at all - I'd assume there are procedural mechanisms for dealing with 'fillibustering' And why close the proceedings?

Adjusting my tinfoil fez, I think there's dirtly laundry being aired.

You know there is. Plenty of world leaders, movers and shakers past and present have much to lose if he gets free access to a microphone. His trial is not the place, however. Finish the trial and let him write a book in the couple of hours before they hang him. Maybe like Tookie, some one will nominate him for a Nobel prize. And you can bet your a$$ they will hang him quickly. With nothing left to lose, I bet he would "sing like a canary".
