Media bias confirmed -- again

Study, what study? I read the New York Times every day and never heard of this!

The Decline of Mainstream Media
By Matthew A. Roberts
FrontPageMagazine.com | March 16, 2006

What common sense has comprehended for decades now finds support by yet another scholarly study: The media has a leftist bias. Jeffrey Milyo, an economist from the University of Missouri, and Tim Groseclose, a political scientist at UCLA, have published their results in the November 2005 issue of the Quarterly Journal of Economics. As if to confirm that bias, over the past few months, the media have given this research scant coverage.

With the aid of many research assistants, Milyo and Groseclose conducted a ten-year study, in which they collected from news sources the citations of think tanks and policy groups. They then compared these media citations to how often they were cited by members of Congress, and accordingly assigned scores.

The results? The researchers expected to find a left-leaning bias, but were astonished at just how behemoth this left-wing bias is. All the major news outlets (except Fox News' Special Report and the Washington Times) scored far to the Left of the average member of Congress. These include (from least to most left-leaning): ABC Good Morning America, Drudge Report, ABC World News Tonight, NBC Nightly News, USA Today, Time Magazine, U.S. News and World Report, NPR Morning Edition, Washington Post, L.A. Times, New York Times, CBS Evening News, and, yes, the Wall Street Journal. Surprising many, the WSJ (the news, not the op-ed pages) brought home the biggest-leftist-bias award of all.

This study, with its unique approach, supplements other recent findings. Elaine Povich (1996) found that only 7 percent of all Washington correspondents voted for George H. W. Bush. More recently, John Tierney (2004) reported that only 8 percent of New York Times Washington correspondents thought George W. Bush would be a better president than John Kerry. As pointed out by Milyo and Groseclose, these studies further demonstrate that Washington correspondents are more leftist than any congressional district in the country.

People keep on saying that all news except FOX is left wing whatever.

Everytime I ask someone to take an article and point out its left bias I just hear "because it is"

I watch ABC news and I find it to be the most centered.

Left bias media, I think it is a hoax started by hannity and rush. Every person who reads a story will take it a little diffrent.

I do not think anyone needed a 10 year sudy to figure that out.

Follow the money.

Hence Bush's low approval ratings.

NBC’s Nightly News ran with a poll last week showing the President’s approval rating at 37 percent and then ran with another poll showing the same thing this week. But NBC, like ABC and CBS, failed to report that these polls show a majority of Americans support NSA eavesdropping to catch terrorists, support the Patriot Act and back permanent tax cuts. CBS’s Bob Schieffer repeated his mantra about “civil war” in Iraq. The Washington Post treated Senator Feingold’s drive to censure President Bush with greater attention than then- Representative Bob Barr’s push to impeach President Clinton in 1996.

Here is a classic example, by NBC's David Shiester, of media bias:

MSNBC’s David Shuster: "Clearly, the President’s team did anticipate the breach. This teleconference video from the day before the storm reached New Orleans shows the President was warned the breach was possible, and the tape shows the President’s team openly worried about the outcome. Max Mayfield, a leading hurricane expert, warned of massive devastation. Then, Mayfield directly addressed the reliability of the levees."

Max Mayfield, August 28 video conference: "I don’t think anyone can tell you with any confidence right now whether the levees will be topped or not, but that’s obviously a very, very grave concern."

Direct evidence of NBC's "reporter" David Shiester, lying to their audience.

Or, howz about liberal Evan Thomas' take on the effect of leftist media propagandists on the 2004 election. I think this accounts for how well Kerry did in 2004...

EVAN THOMAS (Newsweak): "There's one other base here, the media. Let's talk a little media bias here. The media, I think, wants Kerry to win and I think they're going to portray Kerry and Edwards I'm talking about the establishment media, not Fox. They're going to portray Kerry and Edwards as being young and dynamic and optimistic and there's going to be this glow about them, collective glow, the two of them, that's going to be worth maybe 15 points."

Evan Thomas nailed it.

This is how seeBS came to their Bush approval ratings, in February...I love how the news media makes the news and then runs polls as if they had nothing to do with distorting or simply manufacturing them with slanted coverage...They act as if their coverage is irrelevant to what the public is taught by their coverage...This is the height of Gobellian brainwashing.

This is such a boreing topic anymore.

You cannot even debate it.

The bias is there because I say so damnit! Your opinion means nothing because we say the bias is there damnit.

Its like the WMD's you know it. You see what you wanna see I guess.

I detect a strong homosexual bias in your post.

I love Bush. I voted for him 4 times. Where would this great nation be today, were it not for Bush? I have a framed picture of him in every room of my home.

With all due respect, how is "left wing bias" defined here? What does that specifically mean?

Really?...So was it selective news coverage that gives you your impression of Bush, or do you know him personally?...Have you ever seen him give a good speech, or talk and answer questions off the cuff?...I have, these good representations of Bush simply do not seem to get the same attention as Bush's flubs; or the hours upon hours of negative and unflattering coverage that the media salivates at the opportunity of using to harm Bush in the public's eyes.

It seems you aren't even aware that you have been exposed to what the media decides to focus on...If I wasn't an obsessive political junkie, I would surely believe exactly the imagery that you have bought into.

Eloqution is not a necessary component of great leadership, in fact the best and most convincing are quite often the most corrupt...Hitler comes to mind.

Media bias intentionally deceptively flattering to the liberal ideology and deceptively unflattering to the conservative ideology.

[/i]

I saw that tape.
There is a significant difference between "topped" and "breached"
With significantly different outcomes.
I know from direct experience.

Either David Shuster purposely changed the terminology to prove some sort negligence on the administration's part, or he's an uninformed moron.
I'm not sure which...

Evan Thomas nailed it. [/B]
