What attracted you to Porsche? Serious question

Ok. This is a serious question. I am not trying to be cheeky.

Lot's of Porsche owners on OT, and few BMW owners. Even fewer BMW riders...just me and Flatty I think.

So, what attracted all you Porsche owners to Porsche as opposed to say...Corvettes, Vipers or BMW M-Cars? Is there one particular technical feature that you really HAVE to have that the other cars don't? Is it something about having the engine out back? Is there something in your mind that makes Porsche clearly superior to any other sporting proposition and if so. what?

Curious to know.

Of course, if you are one of these digruntled people who hate your car and just come hear to gripe, go ahead, but please keep it short.

Well, initially it was the looks (damn sexy), the performance, and the fact that it was a world class sports car, but when I started researching them and realized how sturdy and reliable they are and how well engineered... So in the end it was the whole package. Just hard to argue with the best.

Seriously?

Four interrelated attributes:

• The '88 just barely meets my financial comfort zone for a track-car.
• Galvanized body.
• Parts availability.
• Very active PCA region. Especially for track events.

The net is I have an 18 year old rust-free car , with good OEM parts availability, that cost me less than $25,000, that I can track with a great club.

Maybe one day I'll move up to Club Racing like so many have encouraged me to do. In the mean time I have other financial obligations.

My dad had a 912 before I was born. He sold that when I was about 13 and had bought a new 1984 Targa. He gave that to me in 2000. How could I not like Porsche...

My Father came home from a canyon run in socal in the 60's...in trail was a 356 and an early 911.

The looks reeled me in. The driving experience got me addicted.

Seriously.... it was cheaper than the RX7's and Corvette's I was looking at.

However I did remember how all the hot rod magazines loved the 944's and the great write-ups they got but I thought "yeah right, like I could ever afford a Porsche". I also like the coke bottle look of the 944. I had friend's who owned old Mercedes so I knew about German reliability, longevity, and engineering.

They make Porsche's with engines in the rear?

I fell in love as a young teenager with the 944, and today, I can afford one. Fairly simple.

I love almost any car, but the 944 suites my needs just fine, can dive into a corner hard, or I can load it up with stuff and bring things places. Nice vehichle realy. Not much to compare it too. Possibly one of the '80's Lotus Toyota's would of been considered if I knew more about them.

When Dad had a '75 911 when we lived in Germany (Ramstien AFB). The neigbhor had a much newer 911SC. I think his was an 81 or 82... turbo look, with the big tail on it... pearl white... it was a hot ride! Dad's was pretty dang nice, too.

I loved Porsches ever since.

Was on vacation at Hilton Head as a youngster and fell in love with a white 930 Turbo. My father always had a VW something growing up. I had Audi's until now. Must be a German thing.

For me, it is several things;
I fit in it perfectly, the corvette is too big, BMW is too common, and the others just feel cramped.
My dad drove a Volvo 144 and I grew up with the sound of a small high reving engine, he also started me on motorcycles when I was very young so I've always been around air/oil cooled engines.
The lines are classic, purportioned perfectly, it's hard to look at one and not want it, even if your not into mechanical things..
I love the racing heritage..

A couple of things attracted me.

1) The nice curves of the 911.
2) First I got a pencil with 911s all over it, then a glass desk model of a 911 as gifts and then I just started looking and I said to myself, self if you find one, see how much it costs and maybe you can afford one. So I spent about a few months eBay just dreaming away and my car found me, Pelican and everything else followed. It's all about fate and my involves a Porsche.

I came in looking for a sports car, with Porsche just another option. The more research I did, the more 911s stood out as reliable, inexpensive cars with good performance. It was a good choice. I like the fact that I can enjoy my car, and not live in fear of the repair bills. Not that it needs repair very often.

When I was three years old (1975) my father bought me a green wooden pull toy that was the shape of a 911. The toy and I were inseperable. So then he found a green matchbox car of the 911 turbo. The one with opening doors and the trailer hook! It read "Porsche" on the bottom, so when he told me the name of the car, that was all it took. My parents started buying me all of the Porsche books they could find, which was probably hard to do in Atlanta, Georgia in 1977! When I saw the photos of the race cars, I knew I had to get one. Growing up, everything I did revolved around Porsche racing. My father took me to every sportscar race in the southeast before I could drive, and I spent many a school day playing hooky at Road Atlanta during Camel GT set-up day and practice.

When I was in college I worked for a local SCCA prep shop, but never on any Porsches. After school, instead of working for my father, I worked for different IMSA teams before getting a job with a CART team. I never got to work on a Porsche race team, but a few years ago I took the prize money from the Indy 500 and with my wifes permission, purchased my first 911, an '88 Targa. No loans, no payments, clear and outright. And I fulfilled a five year olds dream.
