Oz - Cat 5 Hurricane to hit Sydney
I hope you guys are sealing up and hunkering low. This storm is being compared to Katrina.
http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/asiapcf/03/19/cyclone.larry.ap/index.html Matt, Adam and others down under, hope all is/will be well.

Lucky it's actually no where near Sydney - but it is HUGE and hitting the coast of North Queensland as I type with wind gusts of 290kmh.

I have spent a lot of time around Surfers' Paradise, and it would be a shame to lose that quality of life there.
Best of luck to you guys. As I remember, like the water going down the drain, the Hurricanes swirl 'backwards' down there, right?

Last I heard expected landfall is at Innisfail, which is 200km (125 mile) south of Cairns. In other words, it's 1500km (900 mile) north of Brisbane or 2500km (1500mile) north of Sydney.
Australia is a bloody big island. The state of Queensland (where it will hit) is 2.5 times the size of Texas (665,000 sq mile vs a piddling 269,000 sq mile)

Cairns is being hit by pretty extreme rain and wind though from what I hear - strong enough to tear down palm trees.

I've got a few relatives in inasfail & it's pretty much over now. Plenty of debris about the place & a few houses hit the dirt but that's to be expected with gusts up to 290km/hr.

Good crikey, what a mess. Glad to hear the initial reports of "It's not that bad," though.
