And on the subject of Stratocasters, "10 Strats to Die For"
as we were talking Strats down page. This is a very cool web page, if you love guitars.

Ever notice how much more beat up the paint on an old Fender is vs. say a Gibson? They must be using low grade house paint.....

I am going to sound blasphemous here, but I have never liked strats, ever.
I can't think of a single guitar hero of mine that played them. Not one. I am not a Hendrix fan, go figure. Give me a Gibson ES-335 or any carved top les paul or a les paul jr with p90's or a Fender Telecaster any day.

I can't think of a single guitar hero of mine that played them. Not one. Other than Jimmy Page of course, and Jeff Beck too..but then he switched to a strat Seriously...Les Pauls are asss heavy and not a balanced instrument to play.. also the tone is seriously limited give me a nice strat any day.

When the Hard Rock casino opened in L.V. they had a SRV strat on the wall... silly people hadn't put a cover over it yet so I touched it.

I had my own version of Blackie. It was a '58 neck on a '63 black body that had been refinished. Because of the refin I traded a fairly original '65 straight across for it (I really wanted a maple fretboard). I played the hell out of that guitar. Finally in '89 I decided to have the frets dresses as I was fretting out when bending some high notes. Took it to "the best guy in LA" down on guitar row in Hollywood.
I get the guitar back, pull it out, and notice an odd feeling. This guitar had a *perfect* back of the neck...no finish left on it, dark and smooth like glass from years of playing. It now had a huge gouge running almost all the way down the soft-v spine of the neck. I cried. Took it back, turns out he let his underling work on it and he had a staple sticking up in his neck rest stand (stapled a piece of carpet in it...dumbass). when he pulled the guitar back and forth working on it, he dug a gouge into it. The guitar was ruined. You can't fix that. He gave me my money back, but I couldn't play her any more. Sold her for $1K. Bought an early (first production run) Clapton model strat, and while it was nice, it wasn't my blackie... |

I've played strats and les pauls.
I much prefer the lightness and better neck (maple only for me) of a strat, but I also prefered the distortion, sustain, and overall voice of a les paul. In the 70's a les paul was the only choice for me. Today, I would probably go with the strat because my musical tastes have changed. I guess it all boils down to what you like and what sound you want to make. BTW, my wife works for a company that makes keyboards, synthesizers, and effects pedals. Top of the line only. I won't say the name but it is the very best company out there is this line of business hint hint. If someone is looking for as particular product they sell, drop me a PM, I "might" be able to help.

The LP is substantial, buxom and requires wooing. Trouble is after a night with Sophia, my back kills me for two days... |

my favorite strats...
Clapton's Blackie Clapton's Brownie - edit, nevermind, link has later and probably better info SRV's #1 The Reverend's '54 Hardtail David Gilmour's #1, not the 0001 guitar Eddie Hazel's '54 As far as attainable guitars go: The current Eric Johnson signature is one of the better strats I've played. Its definitely the best Fender I've played that was made within the last 50 years. If I was going to spend that kind of money on a strat (and I never will), it would be for one of those. Thats the way they are supposed to be. Last edited by Shuie; 03-25-2006 at 07:47 PM.. |

any of you guys ever play a tokai springy sound stratocaster? I am big on the classic MIJ lawsuit guitars. I know a few guys that swear the right springy sound models are better than any CBS/post-CBS Fender.
I have a couple of MIJ les pauls to go along with my real gibsons and guess which ones I find myself taking on the road and using more and more live?

The Fender Japan stuff was all made in the Fugi-Gen Gakki factory, same as Tokai. Fender has been busted for using Tokai guitars in one of their old catalogs, see link. This is the wrong thread, but if I were spending money on a finished 'strat' style guitar, the '80s Japanese stuff is the first place I would look.
