Question ALASKA CRAB season.......what are the new rules?

Watching "Deadliest Catch" last night......
The rules are different than last year - something like:

Past year percentage of overall poundage factors into overall portion of share in current season, etc

Can someone explain how this new system actually works?

Wish it would work so that they FedEx 1% of the catch directly into my kitchen!

Love the show, have a friend working on one of the boats. Its brutal, but a lot of fun at the same time.

Off Topic on off topic.

I found out where I can free dive for halibut up there. Not the greatest because of a lack available sites but worth the effort if I'm sniffing around up there. I already figured to box and send gear later if I think it's doable after seeing it. The guy owned and operated a few of those fish catch taxi's and knew the whole coast. He laughed when I told him I want to spear a 50# halibut.

There some kind of Fed fisheries council or management bureaucray on the web where you can get all kinds of info. Just in case NOAA will give you sea conditions and temps.

that's all I have.

I believe that certain boats are permited to catch based on their past catches.

Being offshore in a small boat, getting your ass kicked in over sized waves, sliding up to the sea anchor, keeping the boat stable, and surviving it all becomes fun in port when the hard stuff gets cracked open. The situation and events becomes the basis for laughter, one liners, and a good drunk for some. You gotta be nuts to feel so alive when you're so close to death.

That is the new way in commercial fisheries. All the small guys are being forced out and the business is being consolidated into the hands of a few. Kinda sounds like farming. Been doing it for 33 years now and I'm getting the golden handshake from a NGO which is willing to pay me to get off of the ocean. At least they are giving me fair buyout, unlike what happened to many of the crab skippers and crews who were just told "sorry"
