Just saw this movie this evening. Excellent show. It should be required viewing for all Americans. The parallels and underlying commentary on what is going on around us are astounding.

After Natalie Portman went away to college and majored in psychology, she became a smug liberal elitist. Most of the movies she has done since have been political trash. I assume this is no different. Either way, it won't be getting my money.

Oh well, education has that effect sometimes.

I'm voting with my feet. It is my right not to spend my money to enrich the lives of people I disagree with.

I saw the movie and I understand the parallels. But, it left the audience hanging in the end. Who was he really? How did he end up that way? Maybe I missed it when I went to take a leak.

Sometimes I find that it is to my advantage to read a book or see a film with which I think I will disagree. At least it gives me insight into what the other "side" is doing and thinking. Without that advantage, I am like religious groups that come out against something without ever investigating it beforehand.

I wait until the movie has been out for awhile and buy the DVD from Hollywood Video at a reduced price. When I am finished, if I don't want it in my collection, it makes a wonderful and inexpensive gift or an excellent skeet target.

I was going to wait until it was on USA. I didn't say I wouldn't watch it, I'm just not going to pay for it.

Seriously, I've never seen the movie, but now that you mentioned it, it looks like I'll have to rent it.

Have you vetted your doctor, dentist, pharmacist, vet, car repairman, car dealer, the clerk's at the various store's you buy from?

If not, then you appear to be a hypocrite. Or your feet are really busy.

Last time I checked, none of those people were spouting their ignorance on television either.

And besides, let's just say that my area is the political opposite of Cook County...

I suspect you did - they told you pretty much everything but his name. V was a homosexual or other undesirable scooped up during the early cleansing raids, and sent to Larkhill where he and others were experimented on with the drug later used to fake the terrorist attack that brought the Chancellor and his cronies to power. He escaped during the explosion at Larkhill but was horribly mutilated. He spent the next 20 years tracking down and killing everyone responsible, with the film following the final year of his vendetta.

I like the film, but then I don't take it as a political documentary. Alan Moore wrote the graphic novel as an indictment of England under Margaret Thatcher (whom he dissed in pretty much everything he wrote at the time), but people have seen some parallels with post-911 America and the Patriot Act, kind of like people saw all sorts of religious themes in The Matrix.

To me, one of the main themes of this movie deals with how a complacent society can stand by as government introduces more and more control (in the name of "protection") until the vast majority of the populations's rights and liberties are erased. This struck a chord with me as I see this happening now. Things like the "Patriot Act" are pitched to us as a means to make us safer and more secure, but another way to look at it is that fear (of this ill-defined enemy called "terror") is being used to remove our freedoms.

In my way of thinking, living in a "free" society carries certain risks with it, but I am willing to accept those risks for the benefit of being free.

One (paraphrased) line out of the movie was very good, "People shouldn't fear the government - government should fear the people."

Sure, it's just a movie, but I think there are important themes brought out that are applicable to what is going on around us.

Where have I seen THAT trick before? :rolleyes: . . .hmmmm. . . the bible? . . anything tabs writes? -- nah. . . these "parallels in a story" sound like some sort of far-out, misguided, unintended artifact of "entertainment." :rolleyes:
