Project guitar thread
Lets see some pics of your Frankestein guitars!
There's a pic of one of mine below. It's not going to be my Ultimate '58-'59 Les Paul Replica when its done, but its a cool project. Body is Honduras mahogany and has a good weight to it. The top is western maple instead of eastern. The Top carve is off and the routes are a not 100% correct. The neck is flat sawn, and the profile is too thin. I honestly may ebay this neck and have another one made. Fretboard is brazilian rosewood, but its very light in color. The inlays are wrong, but nobody has gotten those right for a long time. Im actually going to have this one nitro laquered in Sepia brown to match my car. The guy who built this would probably cringe at the thought of covering his perfectly book matched figured maple top, but I just don't really like perfect pin stripey tops.

Below is mine. I hand all but the neck on this one. The body is solid African Zebra wood, the neck was made by Carvin and is a full 2 octaves. The dual humbucker is custom to compansate for the tone loss through the wood. Wiring was poorly done by me, but works. I have also built an acoustic guitar. This was 99% made by me. I did not make the tuning pegs. I did carve the neck, lay the inlays and frets. Sadly it does not exist anymore. Somewhere I have negatives of the building process. Both projects were alot of fun - made over 13 years ago. I am planning on making another electric guitar, modeling a Gibson Les Paul.

Looks like there's some nice flamed figure on that maple top...
Got any idea of the pickups you're gonna use? I put a Seymour Duncan JB in the bridge and a 59'er in the neck of my LP copy, and it wailed through a tube amp... I LOVED the tone. Sadly, I don't play much anymore. Maybe do four wire pickups and wire a splitter in there?

Dave, there are some good Les Paul templates available for. Im just starting to learn this stuff, myself. As soon as my engine is in my car instead of my little shop area, the shop area is getting converted to my own personal guitar factory.
Matt, I have the neck pickup normally split on an LP right now and I really like it for clean stuff. I would do the mod again, but not on this guitar. This one is getting two double cream bobbin Duncans because I have them laying around. The neck pickup has the magnet flipped over so that its out of phase with the bridge. |
