Aer Lingus Flight 101 was flying from Heathrow to Dublin one night, with Paddy the Pilot, and Shamus the co-pilot. As they approached Dublin airport, they looked out the front window.

"B'jeesus" said Paddy "Will ye look at how fookin short dat runway is".

"You're not fookin kiddin, Paddy" replied Shamus.

"Dis is gonna be one a' de trickiest landings you're ever gonna see" said Paddy.

"You're not fookin kiddin, Paddy" replied Shamus.

"Right Shamus. When I give de signal, you put de engines in reverse" said Paddy.

"Right, I'll be doing dat" replied Shamus.

"And den ye put de flaps down straightaway" said Paddy

"Right, I'll be doing dat" replied Shamus.

"And den ye stamp on dem brakes as hard as ye can" said Paddy.

"Right, I'll be doing dat" replied Shamus.

"And den ye pray to de Mother Mary with alla' your soul" said Paddy.

"I be doing dat already" replied Shamus.

So they approached the runway with Paddy and Shamus full of nerves and sweaty palms.

As soon as the wheels hit the ground, Shamus put the engines in reverse, put the flaps down, stamped on the brakes and prayed to Mother Mary with all of his soul.

Amidst roaring engines, squealing of tyres and lots of smoke, the plane screeched to a halt centimetres from the end of the runway, much to the relief of Paddy and Shamus and everyone on board.

As they sat in the cockpit regaining their composure, Paddy looked out the front window and said to Shamus.

"Dathas gotta be de shortest fookin runway I have EVER seen in me whole life".

Shamus looked out the side window and replied, "Yeah Paddy, but look how fookin wide it is".

Am pretty sure that the third one in the first post is on the Marshall Islands. Landed there during a cyclone and it was sporty, but no other chance within our fuel range due to the story.

Nice Helo shot, ah those were the times. Did a pick -up once at night..as Joe says 'sporty'.Went back during daylight, and concluded we were insane and lucky.

Shot the approach into Innsbruck Austria years ago. Nice runway but it was situated in-between two 14,000 foot mountain ranges. Did this twice in hard IFR weather then did it once when it was clear and 100 miles vis and we both got really scared when we realized how close to the mountains we were getting when on the approach.

Sometimes its better you not know what its like...

last one kind of reminds me of i think it was laconia, nh? flew cargo in or out of there a few times in the old learjets. i'm sure i'm wrong..was just the first place in my mind it reminded me of..lake just north of the airport.

I did not fly with John but know who he is. We flew for some of the same people but he was there earlier. Excellent book and very realistic. The book "Ravens" is also very good about this part of the war and what went on there.

A very good friend of mine did all the fixed wing flying for the movie "Air America" a few years back. Dave was one of the few people around who was still current in the C-123 and thats what they used for most of the shots. He did it but did not know what a mockery they would make of an excellent company and group of guys who flew there. A lot of us are still pissed off at that movie and the way it was twisted history around, but thats hollywood. Another reason why I rarely go to movies these days.

"Anything, anywhere, anytime - professionally" was the motto, and they meant it and delivered.

Ryan,

Need to get your rear in my taildragger and get you current again. If you can fly a taildragger, aint nothing you cant handle.

I fly the jet for my work but the taildragger still eats my lunch from time to time and its good just to remember what its like. Used to take these puppies into 2-300 foot strips all the time but that was a different place and world all together...

Its 23:15 in my part of the world, so hitting the sack. Hope everyone had a Happy Easter.

hi joe..yeah, i've got a taildragger endorsement, but haven't used that one in even longer. i let my medical expire, too about two years ago maybe? i don't know..not in a big hurry..one day i will when i get a better handle on things. one thing i do have to do this october is take that damn gleim online cfi refresher course again. every two years. well, at least that sort of gets my 'head' current. thousands of hours sleeping away in dusty logbooks that i'm not even entirely certain i know where they are..in the house, in a box somewhere. you go ahead and keep enjoying it for me. i'll fly again some day..
