Ultra advanced guitar lesson...

This is Eric Johnson on Austin City Limits in 1988. Consider yourself taken to school with this one.

He is my idol.

He's an alien.
Maybe that's where Satriani came up with the album title....

He's good, but he's no Nigel Tuffnell!

Crazy thing is that Cliffs is probably the easiest song on Ah Via Musicom. I can play it. But I sure can't crush it with authority like EJ does. I've seen him live at least 10x and each time he jazzes up that song more and more. It's just amazing.

I've seen EJ in a few dingy bars too. It's kinda weird to see him open for Rush in front of 15k people and then a few mos. later play in some bar like I played in in college. He'll be in my area again in August. Somewhere I have a scanned photo of us together. I was star-struck idiot and could barely get out the words "Thank you so much for your music."

I knew EJ's goddaughter in highschool... her dad did EJ's photography, and her mother was on the cover of his Venus Isle CD.

Too bad she (his goddaughter) was a beeyotch.

I heard EJ recently got divorced too. I imagine it's no fun living with such an anal perfectionist. He has said he can tell the difference between Duracells and Energizers in his pedals. Before Venus Isle, he had an entire album all finished and ready to press and then decided to scrap it and start over. That became Venus Isle.

Eric is a real fave. The ToneMeister. Got a couple of records recently called “Giant Steps in Fusion Guitar” and “Fusion for Miles” both a which have EJ on them, as well as many others, and EJ’s stuff is outstanding.

Sorry to hijack your thread Rick, but I gotta tell my guitar royalty story. Many years ago, at time of “One Night in San Francisco”, travelling in the car on the way to see Guitar Trio (McLaughlin, DiMiola, De Lucia) a friend pulled out a tape of the Dixie Dregs. Id never heard of the Dregs or of Steve Morse. It blew me away. The concert starts, the voice man says “Welcome to the stage, Steve Morse.” Had no idea he was opening the show. One man, one nylon acoustic, I couldn’t believe it. He joined the Guitar Trio at the end of their set for a quad performance, just a fantastic concert. I believe he later replaced DeLucia in Guitar Trio for a while.

Fast forward, years later, saw Steve Morse in full electric 3 piece mode in a small club, Dave La Rue on bass and an outstanding former Zappa drummer (I think it was Terry Bozzio) . So close, he could’ve been in the lounge room at home. Do this day, the most impressive guitar tour de force Ive ever seen. The guy is a virtuoso in ANY style.

But I am getting to the point.

Years later again, Deep Purple gig. Finished up drinking in a bar with Ian Pace, Ian Gillan and Steve Morse (and Ozzy’s other son, the one who didn’t appear in the TV show). I am not the hero worshipping type, but swapping guitar stories with Steve Morse over coldies was pretty special. I think he learned a lot that night.

Cool version of Kashmir! Another great version was done by a South Louisiana group called "Twangorama"...just a huge guitar ensemble with various pickers (metalheads, jazzers, flamenco, rock, classical)....no drums, bass or keys....killer group!

I've seen the Dixie Dregs a few times with Steve, Dave and Rod Morgenstein. Last time I saw Terry Bozzio, he was with Jeff Beck, opening for Stevie Ray. Steve Morse is a god too.

Steve Morse rips. awesome.

EJ rips also. He deserves his status as a guitar god. Classic strat-small box 50 Marshall tone...

Any Buckethead fans? Dont laugh or look down at the bucket boy

Ive seen Yngwie live once. Eddie twice, drunk and sober. Never seen EJ, admittedly. Never seen Gilbert. Seen Vai. Seen Lynch. Buckethead would eat them all alive, IMHO.
