Looking for an alternative to MS Project

I need to plan and manage small scale construction jobs. I've been using a paper planner and legal pads and folders and and and. And am tired of losing stuff and being out of order etc etc. MS project looks like what I need, but $600.00 is a bit much considering the need for a proper laptop for this to work. Any suggestions?

Open Workbench looks good. I'm still reading about it but it may work...

I actually found that just the other day. I was looking for something to help schedule track-day activities; I'm helping to organize my PCA region's DE program. I wanted something to schedule all the activities for the various groups during the day, but I found that the smallest time increment it can deal with is a day, while I need resolution down to 5 minute slices. Oh well. I ended up doing it all in an OpenOffice spread sheet
