Will these be 20k in 5 years from now?
Good lord, I hope so.

That will make the decision to buy one VERY easy.

Still need to find out if I fit though.

thrown_hammer 04-13-2006 09:45 AM

People say I wouldn't want one as a daily driver and that I wouldn't fit in it.

These are the same people that tell me a Baja Beetle with no heat makes a terrible winter car in Indiana so what do they know? ;)

JeremyD 04-13-2006 09:48 AM

No kidding - 20K and that is my new track toy. I played with one in the last DE I attended - I pulled in the straights and they were back all over me in the corners. Luckily Sebring is a fast track - any more technical and they would have handed my ass to me.

Those are "chick" cars aren't they?.

You can get a 1 year old one for the low to mid 30s now:)

johncarlos2003 04-13-2006 10:46 AM

honestly guys- don't knock it til ya try it- im Porsche through and through but the Elise does kick a**. Seriously, if you like the feel of a lightweight 911 you will like the feel of the Elise- different but great- a lot of fun on 4 wheels- right up there with a good 911 for pure fun value- well, almost! P cars rule all.

I think the Honda engine would have been no problem to fit. Aren't there the other cars (aside fromt the RWD s 2000) that have the same or a similar engine used as FWD powerplants?

Toyota was probably the lowest bidder or Honda did not want to dillute.

There should be plenty of aftermarket ways of making more power even on the toyota plant by now. Forced induction and you are ready to go.

Unbelievably ugly. Even worse in person.
That's too bad. The original Elise concept was actually very pretty. But then Lotus had to try to make it more "manly" and aggressive. Turned a classically beautiful car into something way too busy and Pontiac-ish. Of course, none of that means a thing once you're behind the wheel...

Lots of ways to improve the engine - lots of bolt on stuff that is cheap and produces HP - if you have trouble with that vision just think the absolute opposite of porsche.

As far as looks and everything - well I could really care less. They go like stink on the track - that automatically makes the car more attractive to me. Form + Function. No PASM - just you and your go-kart.

If I remember when I wanted to do a VTEC 914, Honda's engine rotate counter-clockwise so maybe that was a factor.

Ugly as dog poo... yes
Reported to be uncomfortable... yes
Silly Japanese engine... yes
Am I dieing to own one... YES!

jester911 04-13-2006 12:28 PM

Yeah just try getting in and out of one. Unless you are
140 lbs and 5'8" you will need help. Getting in you pratically fall in. Getting out you feel like you are sitting in a 5 gallon bucket with your knees up around your chin. Other than that no problem:D

Nah.
Mine is my daily driver (got hooked on mid-engined, rear-wheel drive, 2 seater with a 1977 914 2.0) and I am 5'9.5" 185lbs. No problems at all getting in and out.

#1 trick that makes it easy: ALWAYS slide the seat all the way back before getting in/out. If you don't do that it is a pain.

transio 04-13-2006 02:00 PM

Hi everyone!

I'm 6'3" and 220# and I drive my hardtop Elise almost daily with no ingress or egress issues. Fitment is a bit awkward at first, but with time you realize the Elise isn't made to be occupied so much as worn like a uniform. It is a sports car, after all.

As for the Honda 2000 motor, I'm not entirely certain, but I believe that it was not the engine, but the transmission that was the issue. It is a FR setup, afterall, while the Elise is mid-engined. That would require much customization to make work. The 2zz just plops in and voila.

As for looks, well I have to agree with you guys that the S1 Elise was more attractive. Nevertheless, the S2 maintains the same basic lines... it's just a bit edgier.

As for the Elise being a "chick" car, I can only testify as to the magnetism they seem to exude over the fairer sex. If you don't like attracting chicks with your car, the Elise definitely isn't for you!

Cheers! :)
