Total Idiot on the Plane Today

Sitting next to this college kid on the plane today. We are about 20 minutes from landing and the Pilot tells us that we will be getting some rough chop and directs the crew to get all the junk and drinks and secure the cabin for landing. The Attendant (who BTW is a hottie) asks for this kid to finish up and please give her the can. Here is what he said:

"Why do I have to?"
"Sir, the Captain has instructed me to collect all cans and drinks prior to landing"
"Well that just stupid, why should I? Do I have to give you my book as well?"
"No sir, the Captain didn't say you had to give me your book only your can."
"Well that’s just dumb - what if I don't?"
"Sir, please give me your can." with that she held out her hand.

I was looking at her then him then her. He complied.

As she left, I pulled out my water bottle from the front pocket and took a long swig while looking at him.

"Why didn't she ask for your water bottle?"
"Cuz I'm not a dick".
"Well, that’s not fair; she should take your water bottle as well!"

I put my bottle back in the front seat pocket and shook my head and chuckled. After about a minute I looked over at him and he was staring at me all red faced.

"Do ya travel allot kid?"
"Ya, all the time...all over the world as a matter of fact."
"Well, let me tell ya, you may not be flying around as much in the future. Ya see these folks can make it real hard on you."
"I don't see why I have to comply with stupidass requests!"
"Kid, I think you’re getting rights and privileges confused."
"I have a right, I bought this ticket!"
"No, you have a privilege - you bought a privilege not a right."
"I don't see how."
"Listen kid, up in the sky these folks are in charge. You forfeited your rights when you sat down. You should really save your fights for battle that mean something - that’s a heck of a lot of energy wasted."

As we were getting off, I passed the Attendants and three guys from the Airline and two other guys in regular clothes. I didn’t look back but I did stop on the Jetway to fix my bags. Many passengers got off but the kid didn't. I have a feeling he won't be flying to much more!

I'm sorry but that is hilarious! I can't ever say that stuff to people on the plane.

Personally I always enjoy "expert at everything" guy.

Good story! Anyone who gives a flight crew a hard time should be b!tch-slapped, IMO. What a pandejo.

widgeon13 04-15-2006 03:15 AM

Good story.

What airline were you flying because I gotta say, I haven't seen a hottie in some time on my flights and since I've gotten older I think I have even lowered my standards some.

While I think the flight attendants can be surly these days they deserve respect from the passengers and in most cases don't get it. Sounds like this kid doesn't fly much at all or he certainly won't be going anywhere in the future. He 's going to be on the short list.

Short attention span. If he had done something like that two years ago, he would have been removed from the plane and arrested for making a terrorist threat. Up until recently, I only saw behavior like this from infrequent travelers on SWA, but this kind of thing (and worse) seems to be happening once every 2-3 weeks on the flights Im on these days.

VINMAN 04-15-2006 03:48 AM

Gee, where you flying with my stepson??
Thats the attitude of most kids these days. Flat out no respect for authority, or any concept of reality.

Shuie 04-15-2006 03:53 AM

Its not just kids, its people. A few weeks ago I watched a 60+yr old man in business class on a NWA flight throw his bag at a flight attendant because he got on the plane late and there was no overhead space left.

VINMAN 04-15-2006 04:33 AM

Good point Shuie, people in general have turned into a bunch of impatient, rude mother fer's

Joeaksa 04-15-2006 05:02 AM

FA's just love people with an attitude like that.

He will go into the computers and not be allowed back on that airline...

VINMAN 04-15-2006 05:23 AM

Joe, will that kid be "red flagged" on any carrier he flies?

Joeaksa 04-15-2006 06:21 AM

Not any carrier but the one he was on may put his name in their reservation system. This way the next time he tries to get a ticket he may be denied a reservation. Its their option to sell tickets to anyone and after the way this jerk acted he deserves it.

Had this happened before takeoff, she normally would have had him yanked off of the flight. His old ticket goes up in smoke and he gets to book on another airline paying for a new full fare ticket.

To tell the truth its gone a bit far IMHO. This kid deserves it but I have personally seen a case where the FA was in a pissed off mood and another pax asked a valid question and she yanked him off. I wrote a letter to the airline in his defense but never heard back.

After 9/11 they do not take any lip and are using "security" as the basis for being hard a$$ed about it.

This may not be related but has anyone noticed flying on an airline nowadays just plain sucks. I remember when I liked it when my job sent me somewhere. I enjoyed the experience of flying somewhere. I was so facinated I got a private pilots license.

Now if you have to deal with a real person they all seem to have a I don't get paid crap attitude.

I am 6' 5" and it is torture to sit for more than a hour with the pitch of coach seats. With the packed planes the air quality sucks. It is typically hot and stuffy.

Service has been cut back and if your going anywhere but LA to NY you will probably be compressed into some foreign built beer can. No room to stand up or sit straight in your seat.

With the smaller planes and reduced service every plane I fly on now is full and there is fierce competition for the available resources.

Carry on is the best example of how cheap the airlines have gotten and failed to adapt. It is common knowledge that if you check a bag expect it to be lost or looted.

If it is less than 600 miles I now drive and take the .35 per mile.

I was on a flight a few weeks ago where a woman was taken off because she was screaming and cursing because she could not get a seat in first class...and after being the ultimate Biotch at the ticket counter...she was somehow seated in the last row...in the middle (probably not by accident). Under other circumstance...with her mouth shut..she would have been a hottie...some sort of model or actress on the way from a weekend in Vegas to a shoot of some sort. She was very rude to the FA (also a hottie) and she made it clear the FA was much beneath her. After a few minutes ..and she had calmed down a bit...the police showed up and escorted her out. She was like..."what did I do?" I must admit the FA handled it well.

This week I was on an AA flight from Vegas to Dallas when a young woman passed out in the aisle next to me. I jumped up and caught her...and kept her head from hitting the floor and the beverage cart. I was able to lay her down in the aisle and start first aid when the FA showed up and calmly took charge...and went and found a nurse to relieve me. Probably a good thing since I am more used to more serious medical situations and am more at home with a tourniquet or CPR. The FA handled the situation very well. I was impressed. She said it happens a lot...Oh and she thanked me for helping out...many times.

On the other hand...they lost my luggage again...that was the third time in a row.

Tervuren 04-15-2006 10:29 AM

When you check the luggage, give them different destinations for each bag.

"We can't do that sir."

"You did on the last flight."

:)

I hate my age bracket. What a jackas s.

motion 04-15-2006 01:49 PM

I agree, the kid was a jacka$$. Completely.

However, I am getting sick and tired of all the stupid rules out there as well. Its ridiculous. You are not trusted to be an adult any longer. The amount and absurdity of rules these days never ceases to amaze me.

widgeon13 04-15-2006 01:54 PM

Litigation!!!!

Hit turbulence, the can hits the seat partner in the head, claims vision damage and sues everybody under the sun, airline, FA, pilots, airport, soft drink company. Until there are limits on litigation the BS will continue.

Rodeo 04-15-2006 02:04 PM

At least he didn't take a crap on the beverage cart.

Give him credit for something :)

(I hope you know that story, or you are going to think I'm very strange)

widgeon13 04-15-2006 02:09 PM

That was in First Class as well, really nice guy.

alf 04-15-2006 03:17 PM

I fly trans-pacific monthly on NWA. Their service has improved in the last year. Got to know several of the FA and i often get a bottle of wine/champange on the way out.

I figure if you treat people the way you want to be treated it will be fine.
