Fios

Anyone have this yet? I just moved to a new house where DSL wasn't available, so I went with Verizon FIOS. I love it, it screams! I'm getting about 15mbs - way, way faster than DSL, and about the same price.

Install was lengthy though, the guy was here about 5 hours.

I whish!!! I'm begging Verizon to make it real here!!

Fiber to the home is the way to go, check the other offerings they have (TV), very competitive too.

Qwest has fiber to the curb here.
But I would never give them any business anyways.

Yep, Fiber to the house is the way of the future!

We have had fiber in the ground for a couple of years now, I don't know what they are planning on doing with it though...

What kind of equipment do you need for this?

What were the workers doing for 5 hours?

This sounds cool as hell.

Fiber would kick a$$... but I live in an apartment. I think I'll be stuck with cable until I get a house. Then I'd love to get FOIS!

Cable is going to have to up the bandwidth or drop the price to compete with that.

They were at my house for about 5 hours also. Two boom lift trucks, three techs. They have to disconnect and remove the old copper wiring and run fiber optic to the house with new box at the house. Inside they install a battery backup and run ethernet to your new router. Always on. FIOS TV is next.

All the big telcos are rolling out fiber. They will be able to deliver 30+ Mbits when installed, plenty of bandwidth for phone, video, data etc. Antiquated Telecom Regulations and the cable companies are standing in the way.

Cable companies don't want any competition - god forbid they may have to lower their rates and offer packages that the consumer wants.

Some states are easing the franchising rules and there is some effort at the Federal level to get this through too.

I can't wait to have a reasonably (lower) priced video option than that Craptastic service I have now.

For those of you in areas that already have it - I'm jealous!!

I am in Fairfax County, Virginia one of the few places cleared for FIOS TV. I mainly signed up for FIOS internet to get rid of the overhead phone line, they promised to go underground, but when they showed up they didn't realize it was 300 feet from the pole to my house. Its about $35 for 5mbps and I think their TV service is going to start out about $10 cheaper than Direct TV +.
