I like watching some of the shows on History and Discovery...Modern Marvels for example...and there was a show about sewers not too long ago. Fascinating stuff that most people never think about. Here in LA, much of the crap (literally speaking) ends up at the Hyperion treatment plant in El Smelligundo near LAX.

When I was at FSU we went on a field trip to the wastewater treatment plant. The tour guide was going on and on about how clean the water was after the treatment process. We all chuckled. So he walks up to a spicket on the side of one of the holding tanks, grabs a cup sitting next to it and fills it to the brim.

He tilted that fuc_king glass back and DRANK the whole thing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So I guess it is pretty well treated.

The sludged is processed into a flat 1/4" thick mat that is then broken into pieces. Then its used to fertilize farm Fields.

Please oh please dont tell me farmers are using it.
One of my many summer jobs was working at a waste plant. They basically take the primary material (liquids, poop, rainwater, and everything else goes down toilets, drains and sewers) and flow it into a a big rectangular tank with a conveyor belt at the bottom. The pump oxygen in the tank and the "sludge" settles to the bottom. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads7/aeration_tanks1145450365.gif[/img] There it is usually incinerated and then shipped to landfill. The stuff that doesn't settle goes into a secondary tank. Did you every notice those circular tanks? [img]

The aeration tanks are treated with some beneficial bacteria and more oxygen and eventually pumped back into the sea, river, or lake nearby.

It rolls downhill. I thought it was common knowledge.

poopli, on the other hand, is an entirely different concept.

Poop doesn't stink, the bactreria in it stinks.
The bacteria is necessary for digestion, and also to break down the poop into organic materials that are beneficial to nature like fertilizer. Eventually the bacteria eat everything they can and then die, that's why poop stops stinking after a while.

To the guys who have ever been to a waste treatment plant:

Ever notice that a condom that has been flushed and is floating in the skimmer is about 2 feet long? Dunno why. Must get stretched during the process.

First time I went to one of those places I pointed and said "hey look at that mouse".
Turns out it wasn't a mouse, it was a discarded female hygene thing.
EWWWWWWWW.

a couple poop observations, and current waste water applications-

here in the bay area they are starting to use this "reclaimed water" for irrigation in parks, roadside landscaping, and other non food-stuffs irrigation. i anticipate problems in the long run, can anyone remember MTBE in gas? something thought to help the enviorment actually hurt it.

regard trekkor's comment, how does a turd stink up an entire room when it is only in the atmosphere for the 6" from a-hole to water? what's, thats like 3 seconds tops, and it can stink a whole room? poo is mean that way.

sometimes when i eat corn i dont chew a couple mouth fulls on purpose. corns great, it can be enjoyed a second time, nothing like freeing a 10 inch corn-back-rattler!

now ive got some paper work to do.
