Zebra Car - It's done!!

I did it, after many years of dreaming about it - daring myself, I went and did it.

It's not a Land Rover on African Safari, but I can pretend.

Ingredients: One 16 year old Geo Tracker - black. 10 of the cheapest gloss white spray paint cans I could find, and one gloss black no-name can. Three rolls of the cheapest masking tape and some Naval jelly for the rust.

I still need to do some touch up and clean off the old tape glue with mineral spirts, but it's done and I can now focus on the hovercraft skirt project for the next ten days and then the Porsche's oil return line banjo fitting washers.

If it were not windy (gusty 10 mph) and if I used the good paint and good 3M tape it, could of came out much nicer. For all the work involved would of been worth it to tape it and have a professional spray it. The next $700 car I do this to will be better - might even fix those rust holes.

A buddy of mine had a 4x4 tracker before... aside from being one of the vehicles you're MOST likely to die in in a serious collision... it was fun off-road. The short wheel base really helps.

He even jumped it out of a few trenches... it was great watching him get about 18" of air... the thing just bounced a little when he touched down... suspension didn't come close to bottoming out.

Sorta like Ted Nugent's Bronco from about 10 years ago. Notice that there's a light fogging of red mud all along the lower panels, that's not real mud, it's part of the paint job.

That's EXACTLY what I was thinking of. Kach also lives in Michigan. Maybe they're neighbors.

I have the matching seat covers though.

Really I do.

In 1983 I had a orange Ford short box van which I painted black tiger stripes on - had a chin spoiler I made, custom interior with removable loft. Chicks always wanted to have sex in it, I'm not kidding either.

Let us not get started on 70's/80's VAN stories with the fairer sex.

Modesty forbids.

That will get more looks than any other car on the road. I bet you could make some extra money by advertising local hair salons and massage parlors or the local zoo on the weekends! Serious!

If I did that to my '87 Samurai, I'd leave the tape on to hold the body panels together!

A buddy of mine did that to his truck three months before he was shipped off to Viet Nam in 1968. He used house paint, but then he didn't care if it lasted more then three months because he didn't think he would come back. Happily he's still alive, and he drives a monochromatic mercedes these days.

Don't break any laws in that car. It'll be super easy to identify.

Those aren't rust holes anymore, they are close encounters with a Rhino.

Genuine Rhino hits I tell ya, it's worth more now.

I had a cop behind me on Huron River drive last night, he came up fast from behind me but soon turned off. Good thing the speed limit of 35 mph in the Tracker feels like 65 mph in the Porsche. I was doing the speed limit, but next time might not be so lucky.

I wanted to do this paint job in time for the 2004 election, I was going to put the words "BUSH WACKER" on the spare tire cover.

One of my projects is for a 12,000 SF building the client's name is "Zebra LLC", I'm going to offer them the keys for a couple of grand - hoping to get a laugh out of them.

I like it! Nice job!

I believe there is a zebra-striped 944 that runs in NASA Northeast's '44 cup series.
