Here's a very interesting read about innovations in the private sector regarding alternative automobile research: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1621589/posts

The latest issue of Make Magazine had instructions for converting from gas to electric. Very simple stuff. Any moron with a wrench could probably do it in a weekend. Plus, they pointed out that electric cars can easily be designed to provide massive torque off the line (i.e. warp speed ACCELERATION). The only downside so far has been the limited quality (and environmental hazards) of the batteries. However, I believe ZAP just announced they are selling lithium ion batteries for cars which should finally make electric cars nearly as practical as gas cars. This is fresh news so I don't have details. But it is exciting. And you are correct that Porsches make excellent candidates for the conversion. The bodies are strong and light weight. I believe the 914's seem to be particularly popular with EV enthusiasts.
