Jose, can you see? - Spanish 'Star-Spangled Banner'

"Our Anthem" they name it? Shameless!

I don't recall any country's National Anthem being transmogrified into a foreign land's language in order to make a point/further a cause. I always thought that a nation's National Anthem was to be respected, held in high regard, and left alone by singing it in its original language...and certainly not change the wording/melody.
But this crowd is reaching an all time low.
First our flag flown upside down and below the Mexican flag, now our national anthem.
What's next?...Hispanic lawmakers moving to change the names of some states in the Southwest?
Stay tuned.

Destino Manifesto!

A remix to be released in June will contain several lines in English that condemn U.S. immigration laws. Among them: "These kids have no parents, cause all of these mean laws ... let's not start a war with all these hard workers, they can't help where they were born."
~
"...start a war..."? A tad Freudian, maybe?
~
"There's no attempt to usurp anything. The intent is to communicate," Kidron said. "I wanted to show my thanks to these people who buy my records and listen to the music we release and do the jobs I don't want to do."

"Would the French accept people singing the La Marseillaise in English as a sign of French patriotism? Of course not," said Mark Krikorian, head of the Washington-based Center for Immigration Studies, a think tank that supports tighter immigration controls.

NEW YORK - Mexican pop diva Gloria Trevi, Puerto Rican reggaeton Ivy Queen and Tito El Bambino and other Latino artists are recording a Spanish-language version of the U.S. national anthem in a show of support for migrants in the United States.
"We chose to re-record 'The Star-Spangled Banner' to show our solidarity with the undocumented immigrants and their quest for basic civil rights," UBO President Adam Kidron said in a news release.

The recording, dubbed "Nuestro Himno" or "Our Anthem," is set to "rhythmic Latin musical arrangement" but respects the song's traditional structure, UBO said. The song will be primarily in Spanish with a few words sung in English.
.
"Our Anthem"? Oh, well as long as it has a catchy Latin rhythm...hell, fire away. No harm done.
After all, it's just some damn song. Oh, and that silly Mickey Mouse assimilation deal?...who needs it, eh?

"It has the passion, it has the respect, it has all of the things that you really want an anthem to have and it carries the melody," said Kidron.

The original author's great-great grandson, Charles Key:
"I think its a despicable thing that someone is going into our society from another country and … changing our national anthem," Key said.

Those behind the new song say Key and others miss the point. The Spanish version is meant to show immigrant pride in a new country where they live and work.

Yeah - heard about this earlier. What a bunch of crap! In France, they'd draw and quarter an American if he stood up and sang our anthem.

They are not changing the National Anthem of the US, they are writing a new anthem for the illegal, I mean undocumented immigrants here. They can sing it all they like, just don't tell me it is the "Spanish Language version of my national anthem.

Are you saying the first words of the song are not "Jose, can you see?"

Don't mess with me dude. Why do they sing it at ball games if not to make sure everyone can see?

You forgot to point out that the proceeds from the record sales will go to supporting illegal immigrants.
So they write a song that IMO is insulting to the US, and then they use the money against us.
Yep, we are at war.

But what is so funny is the fact 99% of Americans do not know that the MUSIC that Key's poem is set to is an old BRITISH drinking song "To Anacreon in Heaven"...So does that make US "Wierd Als"?

I have challenged my students for the past 20 years to recite the entire 4 verses of the Anthem...not many know it...such a shame.

In Canada, we have "Oh Canada" and another song called "God Save the Queen". You would recognize the music of the second as "Sweet Land of Liberty".
The German national anthem "Deutchestland Uber Alles" (pardon my spelling) is the same music as a hymn sung in the Anglican Church. ( I have read an interesting story set in Germany just after WW II, of Germans stopping to stare in wonderment outside a church where British soldiers are singing something to the music of the German national anthem! )

Would knickers be knotted if Weird Al Yankovick did this parody? If nothing else, it should make people aware of the situation created by greed. We want all of our stuff as cheaply as possible. (And, Yes, California produce does show up in Canada.) Not enough folks want to work for farm wages. Governments turned a blind eye as migrant workers came in to take the jobs and brought all the trappings of their impoverished communities with them. (as did the Asians brought in to build railways (ever hear of Tongs?), the Italians at the end of the 19 th century (Mafia anyone?) and Puerto Ricans (I love that Voodoo that You do!). Oh, and lets not forget the people of African heritage who were dragged in, and made to do the jobs 'no self-respectin' white folks would do'.

To listen to some of you guys, you would think there was a monolithic "American culture" from sea to shining sea and that it was all going down the toilet in about five minutes because of the "illegal immigrants". This wave of immigration might be mostly illegal, but they are the same sort of folks who have been brought in to do the **** jobs since the first colonists found the natives didn't work like that.

The thing is, because big business wanted the workers,'no questions asked', the trickle turned into a flood too fast for assimilation, like so many other 'Little Cuba', 'Little Italy' and Chinatown communities. Now, you have an enclave which is big enough to be a state. (Heck, by the sounds of it, it's big enough to be Canada!)

The song is not the problem. The song is a symptom of our affliction.

I will now don my flame suit. Have a good weekend.
Les

Les, you don't live here, you don't see what is going on, you really don't have enough information to form a reasonable opinion of what is going on in Southern California.
Good thing you have your suit on.

It's simple really. Wanna be a citizen - Wave our flag, sing our song, speak our language, fight our battles, and pay our taxes. Do that, and in my book you're an American. Lady Liberty doesn't care where you were born.

But if you want your own song in your own language, well, find your own country.

Well, a Bush theme is played to the Magical Mystery Tour at the site.

Harmony in music is important and politics is politics. Listen to the very end.

to praise the joys of our hospitality less we not forget that the aging Mexicans are coming here to retire as they have very little in the way of Social Security or Medicaid/Medicare in Mexico. The influx of over 60ish will soon be huge.

isn't that nice?

This whole thing just pisses me off! Just add it to the ever growing list of things killing our country. If you are not a citizen (by birth or naturlization) just shut the f#$k up and get out! Very soon the people are going to start taking action and it ain't gonna be pretty. JMO

you ain't seen nothin' yet.

there's plenty of unintended consequences of allowing them to become legal. The politicians are only concerned with getting reelected. The Reps are split on the issue and the Dems figure they'll capture another voting block.

The more vocal and militant the illegal immigrants get, the more resentful the US citizens will get. Eventually the citizens will say enough is enough.
This is going to escalate to wide spread violence in a big, big way.

Somehow a common voter theme will get dysfunctional results from political hacks seeking superiority. Perfect situation where a new pol outlander can upset the apple cart imo. I think all you need is a few million $ to launch a beltway campaign.

I know facts don't play well here when emotions are running high, but the "they" who created this Spanish anthem is a British guy.

Not sure how you can get angry with Mexicans over that, but go right ahead, anyway.
