Slakjaw is moving to Saint Paul
I was offered a position with Sprint NEXTEL in Saint Paul today and I accepted. I start in three weeks. I am quite happy to be going to work for a great telephone company (Sprint= no union, no “little black book” and oh so much better than the bell) as an employee. (I have worked as a contractor for many telcos over the years)
While I start looking for a place up there, I thought I would ask if any Pelicans are from the Saint Paul area. I am looking for an area that is not too expensive at first but is also not a terrible part of town. Is the area really as expensive as I have been hearing? (Besides having the 6th highest tax rate in the US) Thanks for your input. Kyle |

Isn't Sarah from that area? Haven't seen her post lately.
I hear the #1 housing goal is to get into a hi-rise apt. to keep above the maximum mosquito flight level in the summertime.

Minn is a much better state. No gun registration and CCW is pretty straight forward.

Slakjaw refers to himself in the 3rd person. And George likes his chicken spicy.

![]() If you are working in downtown St. Paul I would advise *not* looking to the South in the Eagan, Burnsville areas (they are nice but)...find a map...anywhere that takes you up 35E into downtown is a hideous traffic jam of a commute somtimes starting as far south as 494...gets worse in the winter...that whole stretch of freeway South out of downtown is 2 lanes and 45 mph ![]() Maplewood, Woodbury, Oakdale all pretty nice but expensive taxes in Washington County...maybe Roseville would be a good start...you can sneak South on Snelling Ave and cut East into downtown on 94. Got a price cap on the house? There are some nice houses in St. Paul but it seems the upkeep varies block to block and they usually are no deal...

I also like Shoreview and White Bear Lake a little farther North...depends on what kind of a commute you are willing to put up with. I go from Blaine to Eagan each day and its averages 45-50 minutes for a 24 mile jaunt.

I would look at Little Canada, Roseville, Maplewood, and North St. Paul. I lived in Little Canada before moving to St. Louis Park...Minneapolis and St. Paul are two very different cities.....
As for the winters.....I miss them, they make you appreciate the summers

The Inver Grove Heights area isn't bad either, its a quick jaunt right up 52 to downtown St Paul.
I miss the area as well especially the outdoor hockey rinks. Unless something has changed, its not the easiest to get a CCW in Minnesota, and the county I lived in you need to a Permit to Purchase a handgun. Bill |

I've lived in Woodbury, White Bear Lake / North Oaks, and Apple Valley. All are very nice suburbs with different things to offer.
I'd say Mpls/St Paul has much easier traffic than most large metro areas (SoCal?). The trend is urban, with lots of older little neighborhoods in or near the cities redeveloping into great communities. If you like the artsy, liberal, urban granola types. Plan on spending $400K for a 'nice' home and it's hard to spend under $250K for anything decent. Even nice 1300sf townhomes in Eagan, Apple Valley, Burnsville, Woodbury run $220K. The market is pretty soft. Rents are $1200-1500 for nice places in most neighborhoods. Can't rent squat for under $800. There aren't too many 'BAD' neighborhoods, again relative to other metros. Tell us WHERE you will be working and perhaps we can give better advice. The Twin Cities spreads over a wide area. And are you single? Young couple? Young family? Old fart? That may determine where you'd want to live. Welcome! E |

Nice another pelicanite in St Paul... I moved up here several months ago and actually live in downtown St Paul. Personally I like it downtown because I am young and single, and it is quite and clean for a metro area. I guess it would be easier for us to advise you of good areas if you give us a better idea if you are looking for a home/town home/apt, what part of town you will be working in, if you want a quieter area or more active area, older or newer area, etc...
I moved up here from Chicagoland, and the traffic and cost of living is definitely less. Good luck with your hunt!

OK
Thanks for all you replys. The place I will be working at is 847 Earl St in St. Paul... This is NOT an area where you would want to live. It looks like Maplewood is kind of close.. But I know nothing about the burbs around the area. Can anyone here please give me some ideas of areas not too far away from where I have to drive every day. Thanks again, Kyle |
