Any bug (insect) guys out there?
This fellow showed up on my front porch last Sunday. Anybody know what it is? No, I don't live anywhere near three mile island.

That is one creepy ass spider....
|
That bad boy (girl) was roughly 5-6" long.
I'm normally a live and let live guy when it comes to the spiders (except IN the house) as they do eat the other pests, but this one decided to make it's home right over the walk-out door of my garage and met it's end at the business end of a can of brake cleaner. |

You probably failed to nurish the larva properly, plus you mentioned that you found it away from it's natural habitat - a busted, goo-spewing reactor. I suggest that you immediately order some uranium for your new friend. Meanwhile, keep that fuzzy li'l critter next to as many smoke detectors, fiesta-ware, and lantern mantles as you can find. In no time, you should have a proper Mothra: Length 135 Meters Weight:15,000 Tons Wingspan: 250 Meters Air Speed: Mach 3 http://www.meter.com/mothra/index3.jpg |
True and there is only one guy who can get rid of them.

Damn, that is one hell of a gay moth.

Based soley on the size of your "little" friend there, Hugh, I'd have to venture a guess and say he was a Goliath Beetle. He's an amazing specimen!!!
Is that your hand holding him? And did you find him in California? Randy |
dems good eat'n

http://video.clipstream.com/content/...twospiders.jpg Like the Banana Spider, above, aside from the "freak" factor, and a painful bite if they are threatened or provoked, these guys are pretty much harmless. Randy |

I went on the offensive and starting going out in the evenings with a black light in one hand and rubber mallet in the other. Only a few made it inside last year. Night before last was my first hunt of the season. I killed 8! I hope that's not a sign of what lies ahead. At least they're easy to find with the black light: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1146706417.jpg |
This guy is one of my all time favorites...
http://arnica.csustan.edu/photos/ani...tato_bug_3.jpg The first time I saw one of these guys was on the flightline at MCAS El Toro. Thought it looked like some kind of nuclear radiated mouse with extra appendages. The mouth on this guy is a pair of pretty menacing pincers that appear capable of administering a very painful bite. http://arnica.csustan.edu/photos/ani...tato_bug_1.jpg Randy |
Randy:
Yeah, that's me holding him. I found that bugger on the Island of Dominica down near Venezuela a few months ago during filming of Pirates of the Caribbean II & III. |
randy,
any help identifying this specimen? caught it with a bag of caramels and hersheys kisses. need to release soon...costs loads to feed..and chatters up a storm of gibberish.. ryan http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1146726226.jpg |
Ryan,
That looks to be a Common Brown Beeyotch. Interestingly, the Beeyotch comes is in all sorts of shapes and sizes. There is the Money-Grubbin Beeyotch and the Stank Beeyotch, just to name a few. I'll see if I can find some pics to post of each of these critters. ;) Randy |
:D

Name the Geographical location and species...

austin, i'm pretty sure the species name is hottus *****us...can't say where the geographical location is exactly..i do know for a fact that she's not in mine (pity), but i think there are are large, localized populations of these creatures out on the west coast and in many major population centers where there's lots of green.. ;)

hmm..guess i get edited out...'hottus beeotchus" maybe?? :D

It's a couple of Camel Spiders. One seems to have latched his teeth into the other one's arse. Dat's gotta hurt! Randy |

This one looks like a cross-breed....Money-Grubbin, Stank Beeyotch....the armed and dangerous kind! Randy |
Solfugida? If so, it isn't a true spider....I think.

SOLPUGIDS - Families EREMOBATIDAE and AMMOTRECHIDAE Solpugids, also known as Solifugids, "Sun Scorpions", "Camel Spiders", "Sun Spiders", "Wind Scorpions", and other similar names, are a type of nocturnal arachnid (not insects at all) somewhat related to scorpions, but representing a distinct evolutionary lineage. They are especially common in desert regions of the world, including Southern California, where various species in genera such as Eremobates and Ammotrecha regularly surprise and bewilder people encountering them for the first time. With their huge jaws (chelicerae), they are fearsome in appearance [see images below], but have no venom, and if they bite humans (requiring provocation) nothing will happen (despite some rather wild urban legends told by Desert Storm veterans). They are voracious predators of small arthropods, however, using the force of their jaws to kill their prey rather than venom. Some stories of them clipping hairs off the faces of sleeping humans do seem to have credible sources, but the only speculation as to why they might do this is if females use the hairs as lining for the burrow where they lay their eggs (a big IF). Since they are harmless to humans and many of the arthropods they consume are pests, Solpugids can be considered beneficial, and should be left unmolested. From here. edit: On this page, click on the link to Empire of the Camel Spider and watch a short fim of them in action. Randy |
I knew this was going to a great thread!!
