American Iron

Curtiss P-40 Warhawk

Lots of other aircraft all on display and flying, many giving shows and demo's , its great to see this stuff still doing the job. Several are home based here and all are privately owned aircraft.

The Yak 9 really gave a good show,

Great shots, Todd!

After spending 20 years working on fighers in the USMC (F-4 Phantoms and F/A-18 Hornets) I still have a special place in my heart for the classics.

The WWII prop jobs especially. Something about the rumbling of a B-29 in the pattern just impresses the he!! outta me.

Always wanted to fly the Sabre. This one looks nice overall but the paintjob is a bit gaudy for me.

Randy, the old chink and polish airplanes are still using radial engines. Nothing like the sound of a radial. I live right under the flightpath of a smaller airport and hear the Yak 18/nan airplanes flying all the time. Still sounds very nice.

Nice pics. I never noticed how much the YAK 9 resembles a P-51. I used to live near a local airport, someone owned a polished aluminum P-51 that used to fly from there. I could tell what it was before I could even see it, not a radial but those classic warbirds have a great sound.

Great shots K9.

I was at an airshow in Irvine, Ca a few times and saw one of the F-86's do a demo dogfight with a MIG. The F-86 was doing a loop and didn't have enough room to clear the ground and smashed into the earth. Was a sight I will never forget. He crashed away from the crowd and the heat was so intense even from a distance. Its something thats burned into my mind forever. I just love those F-86 Saberjets.

One of my moms friends just flew a 1937 Piper Cub from San Francisco to a Piper Cub show in Florida. She was going to stay with my mom for a week or so but the weather got bad and she had to get back to Ca. I was hoping for a ride in the vintage Cub but maybe next time.

Hey guy's -

The P-40 is actually based at the St Augustine airport and flys out of there regularly, you just dont see them much anymore,

The Yak 9 has been converted like alot of them to the Allison engine other than that it is stock and an awesome flying machine.

I have been a pilot since age 16 and go to as many shows as I can fit into the schedule with the P-car's taking the lead.

There were lot's of stuff to see and do and all for $10.00 entry with free parking, a great day, kids got in for free.

There's a guy that owns a big farm near Watsonville, CA that owns one of the two flyable P51A's in the US. It was up at Alameda NAS during Fleet Week one year. He was startled when I walked up to him and asked about the aircraft, almost no one knows what an A model -51 is (people on this board excluded of course). He proceeded to tell me all about it, pretty neat, and it was in like new condition.

Unfortunatly, that was a day I didn't have my camera with me, pre-digital days, so didn't get a chance to take any photos.

a number of recon pilots became ACES!!!!! love it! what a bird those mustangs! our last airshow here where i work had a flyby of a B-17 from falcon field, mesa , az. now that was something to hear and see. 2 passes...........last one on the deck! felt like i was on catch-22 beach in guaymas, mexico where they filmed catch-22! last time we were there diving, runway was intact, walls intact, palm trees still there, tower there. was waiting for MILO to come around corner and sell me the brooklyn bridge and YOSSARIAN to run around freaking out about flight duty. that was over 25 years ago. now the beach is a defunct club med(sigh)! cool thread.

You didn't get more pics?

Heck, I took 454 pictures at the Air & Space museum(s) in DC alone! hehehe

Lots of nice planes there. I haven't been to an airshow in a while. Last time, I didn't even own a digital camera!

Deer Valley is 2 miles West of my house and is where my plane is kept. The L-39's are a few hundred feed from my hangar.

Lots of very interesting planes in this area... Friend of mine has one of the L-39's and loves it.

joe had to go over to deer valley to look at ex vietnam "mule" all wdrive for towing planes. saw the yellow yak that comes over to skyranch and the rodger ramjet mobiles L-39's what a plane! we have a blue/gray one nesting at the hanger in minden. guy doesnt fly it much but it is in beautiful shape. he just leases hanger space from us and pours cash into it. it is sweet. from what i heard they are the next step after prop trainers before a warsaw pact pilot got to get into a MIG. very nice planes. deer valley seems to be spawning ground for these. one day we went over there and as we were leaving the silver MIG-15 was taking off with a ball of flame coming out rear nozzle going FULL AB! now that was a sight i wont soon forget!

I kind of hate to mention this, but Tom Cruise flys a P-51 Mustang. I saw this TV special where he took a buddy up in it and later took some superbikes to a track. I think this was part of a damage control effort, just PR to show Cruise as a adventerous guy and not the nut case most people think he is.

Kach,

The guy is a nut case and is gay as hell to boot and I for one will never watch a thing he makes again. Sorry but just do not need to watch movies that badly to support this jerk. Sorry to see that a nice P-51 is wasting away at his hands.

Charles,

Am overseas now and not returning home for another week or so but we need to get together at the DVT resturant to talk airplanes and 911's!

I live off of Cave Creek road between Phoenix and Cave Creek, so not far from you nor the airport.

Joe A
