Are people like water?

If we liken the people of the poorest, most corrupt, most crime infested country or society on earth to the dirtiest or most polluted water available on earth and people from the second worst country in terms of poverty, corruption and crime to the second most polluted water on earth and so on all the way up to likening the people from the richest, least corrupt and least criminal society to the cleanest water available on earth, when would it be wise for countries to let in massive numbers of people from poorer more corrupt countries? Can the emigration of millions of people from poorer countries to wealthier countries and the resulting consequences for the level of prosperity, crime rate, level of corruption etc. of the host country be analyzed similar to how one would mathematically analyze the resulting purity of water in a mixing problem typical of what you would solve in a differential equations course or is it more complex than that? And are the qualities of a country a result of the qualities of its average citizen?

Interesting topic.

IF the immigrants are coming here to take "minimum wage" jobs, and businesses are willing to hire them, then the businesses profit and the disconnect between the extremes of the wealth curve increases.

Are people like water? Well, water seeks its own level and goes for the lowest. I wonder if that isn't part of the human condition?

I would like for everybody on this planet to have the same opportunities that I have as an American.

But come here legally. Nice dream, but not possible. Time to build a big wall.

What's odd to me about this big immigration debate is that it typically recurs in recessions and depressions. Hitler wouldn't have gotten much traction blaming everytning on the Jews had Germany not been participating in a worldwide depression.

So, after 20+ years, why is this suddenly a hot topic now?

First of all, people are not like water. And the people I know from wretched places like Sierra Leone, Ethiopia, Bangladesh and the Congo are some of the most wonderful, hard working, intelligent and good hearted people I know.

As for the immigration debate - it has mostly to do with illegal immigration - up 40% in five years alone. People dont see mass lawbreaking as a good thing and are finally getting fed up.

This is not a big immigration debate - its an illegal immigration debate, please, get it right...

That said, nine one, I do not think communities are like you describe. Without any immigration, a perfectly good communitie can turn bad, and a bad one, good. When there where tons of immigrants coming into the US a century ago, it IMO brought us up. The current problem, is we have people with no respect coming in, breaking our laws and spitting in our government's face and its people's face.

Kindly pardon my correction.

By all means lets keep out water "pure". We can't have the poor or downtrodden messing up our pristine country.

scary...

Because mid-term elections are coming up, seems axiomatic to me.

I have been bitching to my "elected representatives" since Uncle Ronnie gave them a pass and did nothing to stop the flow of illegal immigrants. The poor and downtrodden are welcome, the criminals can stay home.

Scary my ass, someone tries to use a literary device to provide a bit of perspective and you turn it into liberal social commentary. You are often insightful and make phenomenal comments, but sometimes dude, I think you spent too much time at liberal arts college.

How about this. Instead of talking about people being like water, how about water being like water. In the coming years of crushing world overpopulation, potable water will become like gold, only more valuable. Perhaps not in my lifetime, but definitely in that of my children. Sheeple don't think at all, politicians don't think long term, that will be the death of us all.

Xenophobia thinly veiled as a "literary device."

Do you even know what gets taught at a "liberal arts college"?

Overpopulation won't likely be the crusher...there will be a nice plague that will take care of that problem first. But I agree on the underlying run-up. And if we gave a damn, we'd be spending more money on figuring out *that* problem then feeding the military industrial complex so politicians with big heads and small penises can run around the world "protecting" us...

It will be interesting to look back in twenty or thirty years to see how U.S. society has changed. Countries with falling populations like Germany believed that they could bring in immigrants to join the workforce and that they would pay into the social system to support the large numbers of retiring Germans but it doesn’t seem like it’s working out the way they planned. First generation immigrant students do much worse than native German kids in school and second generation immigrant children fare even worse so I don’t know how beneficial they will be to the German economy. The massive immigrant community in France is also not doing well as we saw on TV last year.

http://service.spiegel.de/cache/international/0,1518,416429,00.html

" 'Germany is the country with the largest disparity' between first and second generation immigrants, the report says. 'Second-generation students lag behind their native peers by 93 score points, which is equivalent to one and a half proficiency levels. This is particularly disconcerting, as these students have spent their entire school career in Germany.' "

http://www.maynardije.org/columns/bowman/051109_workforce/ (U.S. workforce)

Below is an example of a mixing problem for liquids that describes the amount of salt, represented by y(t), in the solution as a function of time, t. If things like the crime rate or academic proficiency level (e.g., SAT) of new immigrants is known, I wonder if a similar technique to the mixing problem could be used to predict the crime rate or level of academic proficiency for the society t years in the future.

Xenophobia?

Looks like Xena is doing her part to curb the population explosion...
