This happened to Sinead O'Conor with career ending results a few years ago. (Ref: tearing up a picture of the Pope on SNL)

I found that her music is fantastic. She sings of angst, lost love, sorrow with more emotion than perhaps any other female singer I know. Her Lion and the Cobra album is still one of my favorites.

Was her SNL stunt wrong? Perhaps it was the wrong audience and the wrong era. By the time she was on the scene, punk rock was getting way watered down - nothing like what it was in its infancy - remembe the antics of the Sex Pistols, The Clash, and the like? Had she done her stunt a few years prior, it may have just been part of the whole 'anti-establishment' feeling that punk rock offered - alas, it was too much, too shocking, too late in the punk rock era.

The difference between Sinead O'Conor and the Dixie Chicks is that O'Conor had talent, and had something to be voice an opinion against - the Dixie Chick have neither.

Just my $0.42,
-Z-man.

I grew up in SoCal hating country music. Wouldn't ya know I married a girl from the MidWest who loved Elvis and Country... I still won't listen to banjo country but damn if there are couple country artists that I do enjoy - in moderation. I believe the Eagles consider themselves a Country band no...?

Edit - crap I forgot the main point. After about 2-3 hearings I got sick of the DCs. That lead singer Natalie has a very irritating voice - one that I associate with a fat unhappy beotch standing on her lineoleum floor yelling at her shoe salesman husband who's thinking how best to dispose of the evidence...

Too true, she is very nasal. No purity at all to that fingernails on the chalkboard sound.http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/...s/pukeface.gif

They're nothin' but "Bananarama" with twang...

I have no use for modern "country" music. It's no more than some nameless promoters' vision of an American way that they can sell. It doesn't have the heart and soul of the old stuff; it's degenerated into shallow marketing. Anyone that falls too far outside of that canned vision is snubbed. That said, I grew up with Johnny Cash and still like his stuff (among others). Old school all the way. Here is what he thought of the modern country music scene that had dropped him like yesterday's news. This was an actual add that ran in several music magazines:

Goes for anything top40 these days. I hate country but like Johnny and Willie.

who the ***** cares what a celeb or musician says concerning poletics, medicine or engineering? They only know how to perform. Thats what they get paid for. Let them say anything they want - my 7yr old makes more sense concerning these matters - if asked is opinion he just staes "I really don't know about that stuff Dad, now ask me how to catch a Catfish!"

I don't like country. My wife likes the DCs, but completely ignores their politics.

Country isn't what it once was. I see more "purity" in bluegrass. I watched this little movie a few years ago called "Oh Brother Where Art Thou". I think Allison Krause has more talent in her toenail clippings than a whole army of Dixie Chicks.

artplumber 05-23-2006 06:57 PM

BTW by "purity" I just mean a voice you can listen to all day. Can be crystal clear tonality, smoky, whatever, ... but I hate that nasal whine - reminds me of the scanning from the TV or nails on the blackboard.

11 years ago my wife introduced me to Allison Krauses songs - We had many of her songs at our wedding. That woman has some pipes!

M.D. Holloway 05-23-2006 10:32 PM

 huh?

Mulhollanddose 05-23-2006 10:33 PM

You said she had pipe.

Anyone referring to themselves as the ______ Chicks, should have the good sense and decency to make sure they are attractive first.

Man Law?

Another nasal annoyance - Shania Twain. True she's very easy on the eyes but her voice makes my spine knot up.

We can blame Canada for Alanis Morisette. We can nuke Canada for that..
