				Earthquake last night.

About 10:4o last night. Shook the house pretty good. Rattled the windows and made the beams creak. Then that anxious wait for the BIG shake or aftershocks... nothing. Then this morning I read that it was only a 1.8. ONE POINT EIGHT? True, the epicenter was pretty much directly under my house, but there is no way my house survives a 5 or a 6. No way. Another thought...It's probably not a good thing to have the epicenter of ANY geologic activity right under your damn house.

What a coincidence! My g/f also felt an earthquake last night, but in this case she was directly under the epicenter...

In one case it was a fault upthrusting and in the second a downthrust movement along the fault...

The closer U are to the epicenter of a quake the more of a jolt you feel, as the shock wave is short..the further out you are the wave becomes more elongated, and have more of a rolling sensation.

When I lived in Japan we used to feel quakes almost daily, at the very least, weekly, but they were very slight. I've been in Cali several times, probably 2-3 months worth over the last 6-7 years, and never felt a thing.

The energy of the quake, in terms of "g", or percent gravity, varies not by the square of the distance, but by a very complicated equation. And there are several equations by several researchers. I use the average of 5 equations. It also depends on the soil or rock under the house. It's all very complicated, and I just use the equations. I'm not smart enough to derive any equations. Charles Richter is said to have been one of history's most intelligent people, up there with Einstein. Alamo, BTW, sits atop a very interesting seismic zone, between the Calaveras fault and Concord fault. There seems to be some communication between the 2 faults, with small quakes centered very deep.

Was PeeWee's bicycle harmed? Did the basement get a seismic retrofit?
