Non-S Cayman on the way in South Africa

Cut-price Cayman on way from Porsche

A second, less powerful, version of the Porsche Cayman is on its way to South Africa with a 2.7-litre, 180kW, flat-six engine instead of the 217kW, 3.4-litre engine of the original Cayman S.

The letter 'S' is dropped for the second car. It will be released in South Africa at the end of July and the SA price will be announced at the end of June.

The new Cayman will sell in Germany for €47 647, or 23 percent less than the €58 529 of the S.

The company says the engine has been tuned for low and mid-range power, resulting in a claimed 0-100km/h time (with manual transmission ) of 6.1sec and a top speed of 255km/h – but fuel consumption of 9.3 litres/100km.

The S does 0-100km/h in 5.4sec and its top speed is 275km/h.

Peak torque for the new car is quoted as 273Nm from 4600-6000rpm and standard issue is a five-speed manual gearbox - but a six-speed manual or a five-speed semi-auto with manual sequential change via rocker switches on the steering-wheel spokes are also available.

The torque on the S is 340Nm from 4400-6000rpm.

The new Cayman rides on 17" alloy rims and 205/55 tyres front, 235/50 rear. Porsche's stability management system is fitted as standard with active suspension management (PASM) available as an extra-cost option.

The latter can drop ride height by 10mm and the shock absorbers automatically adapt to speed and road conditions; the driver can choose between "normal" and "sport" programmes by pressing a button on the centre console.

The new Cayman has black brake callipers, black front-spoiler leading edges and a trapezoidal tailpipe. The cabin trim includes air-conditioning, a radio/CD player, seat covers in Alcantara leather, black-faced instrument dials and door entry trims bearing the Cayman logo.

It has two separate luggage compartments because of the mid-mounted engine with a combined volume of 410 litres, the same as the Cayman S.

Why would they even bother with such little differences in trim?
