I think the thread has lost it's point.
The tone is negative and that was not my intention.

I see in the news every day the problems that real people are experiencing. I don't know anyone who feels comfortable with the current situation in the world.

The purpose of my opening posts was to share what is a comfort to me.
Engaging in endless debate about subjects that are not related to the topic can be done some other time.

Again, if anyone is satisfied with the state of the world, please tell me why.

that's what you get when you approach something like this , with the methods of a door to door hoover sales man

that's a blatant lie
the purpose was to sell your religion
to convert new souls
and to redeem your own through conversion (which is part of your religion)

one doesn't have to be satisfied to be happy
look at the Dalai Lama
he's not in a satisfactory situation yet he is always smiling
it's called enlightenment , look it up.

Stijn , are you like this in person?

Apathy is like putting a sack over your head. It doesn't work.

Mentally giving up on the condition of the world is very common.
People are doing exactly as you suggest. Creating diversions, and going on with there lives.

They pretend like the problems don't bother them. Not a real good idea.

Well as of right now, the vast majority of the people in this world claim to adhere to one religion or another. The overwhelming (more than 85% by most counts) of the people in the US claim to be religious.

If the world is in such bad shape right now, it appears that religion isn't doing anything to mitigate it.

you said you didn't know anyone who was comfortable
i replied , many people are confortable through apathy

don't twist my words, rebutted your stupid arguement with a fact
it does work for a high percentile of the civilised population... no matter what you say...

and for the record, no i am not totally apathic about the world
there is about 1% of me that truly cares about the friggin rainforrest, another 1% cries daily for the poor hungry kids in africa, and i think another 1% wants to see world peace...

the other 97% of me couldn't care less , as long as it doesn't bother me... and that's how most folks think... even most so called "religious folks"...

Moneyguy1 06-17-2006 10:47 AM

And what is the difference between ignorance and apathy?

I don't know and I don't care.

svandamme 06-17-2006 10:57 AM

i'm actually pretty much convinced , that apathy is vital for emotional survival... people cannot function if they take every bit of misery in the world and start "Caring" about it...

those who donate to charity , simply do it to sooth their concience
sure , they will say they seriously care , but except for those that give to the point they have to cut back on food , clothes , and playstations... it's not really hard core now is it.... and trust me , very few donate till it hurts...

furthermore, it's no use anyway , you can give a man a fish, or you can teach him to fish... sure, but some folks are just not good at fishing, or they are in the wrong location...so you can try teaching them till hell freezes over, or you can keep giving fish tell hell freezes over... either way , you can do it till hell freezes over , and you still haven't fixed a thing.
