Question Mobil 1 vs Amsoil

I realize Amsoil is sold thru MLM and they have a good story. I have used both Mobil 1 and Amsoil synthetic, with good results on both. I am looking at the longer drain interval quoted by Mobil 1 and Amsoil. My question is-- is one better than the other or are they about equal. And can they hold up to the 15,000 and 25,000 drain intervals they tout, I also realize that the filter will probably need to be changed at 10,000 mi. This is for my daily driver Toyota, P-car gets and oil change every 3K mi. or 6 months.
LubeMaster, any comments or educated opinions.

About equal. They only differ in their additive formulations.

LubeMaster77? Oh, yeah... he's got an opinion.

Where does Mobil tout longer change intervals? My info indicates they suggest a near standard schedule.

FWIW, it's hard to beat a commited chemical powerhouse like Mobil for synthetic oil.

From Mobil-1 website:
If you drive under normal conditions and use Mobil 1 Extended Performance in your vehicle, the oil is guaranteed to protect your engine for 15,000 miles. We also recommend that drivers consult their owner’s manual while their vehicle is under warranty, and follow the guidelines set forth there. Additionally, we recommend that if consumers drive routinely in severe conditions that they follow the oil change interval recommended in their owner's manual for severe conditions.

From Amsoil website:
AMSOIL Synthetic Motor Oil is recommended for extended drain intervals in unmodified, mechanically sound gasoline fueled vehicles as follows:
• Normal Service(3) – Up to 25,000 miles or one year, whichever comes first.
• Severe Service(4) – Up to 15,000 miles or one year, whichever comes first.

They both use MLM distribution networks...just asking.

Besides, we all know that after the civil war many of the generals in the Army became captains of industry.

Gen. William Anderson Motors
Gen. Bartholomeau Arthur Mills
Gen. Samuel U. Electric

Then why is it that there was a time, not that long ago, when the only way to get Amsoil was through an Amway distributor?

Several pretty decent studies have been done on the various synthetic, semi-syn and conventional oils, comparing apples to apples as it were. I seem to recall that the Amsoil was superior in some respects, Mobil 1 in others.

Cashflyer - if your gonna quote me (thank you BTW!) then make sure to tell the whole story.

Amsoil makes a good product as does Mobil. They meet the latest API specs which is no small task. In my opinion you will see little difference in the two. Both use a synthetic base oil and just enough adds to hit the API spec. Amsoil has a cult-like following for a few reasons. The do have some good stuff but they have also mastered the independent, mult-teir rep thing. I have met a bunch of their folks and some are really pretty bright while others are plain wacky.

Can you go wrong with either one? Nope, but then again the guy that is looking to spend $5+/qt for oil is also the guy that is taking care of his car so naturally it will have less issues than say my sister who never has changed oil in any of her cars.

We have recently hit our mfg capacity in our 5 ops here in the US and are activley seeking some toll mfg to help us keep up with demand. When we talk to our various competitors (who have plenty of capacity) they tell us that we are adding 3 to 6 times more of the goods to our oils and in many cases using stuff that they can't source very easily. We have to help them with that as well. These are companies that you all have heard of and may think that there stuff is the best.

Some of you guys have gotton our oil and used it. Found that it does the job. Amsoil and Mobil are good, don't get me wrong. I just know how to make a better one and take biz from them is all...

Umm... because it wasn't?
Amsoil has never been a part of Amway. Amsoil has always been exclusively available through AmSOIL dealers.

However, many MLM sellers sell multiple lines of items from multiple companies while chasing their dreams of wealth. Maybe you know of some Amway dealers who sell Amsoil.

Or maybe the name just confuses you.

What is your oil? I switched from Mobil to Amsoil because for me it worked better. If your oil is better, then I'm interested.

For what it's worth, and as mentioned in another thread, I only became a dealer to save some scratch. I don't go to their meetings, or their classes, or to their pep rally, etc, etc. I just use their oil.

The company was initially spelled "Amzoil" for "Amatuzio's Oil" - named for the founder A.J. Amatuzio. It was changed to Amsoil to settle name litigation brought by another company.

Thanks guys. Confirmed my thoughts as well. I too would like to hear about your product LubeMaster. I use Mobil 1 0-40 W in the 02 Boxster and 20-50W Valvoline VR1 Racing in the 87 Carrera. Boxster gets changed every 6 mo or 5K and Carrerra every 3K or 6 mo. Have stayed away from synthetic on Carrera due to leak stories. No leaks now and I don't wish for any. Carrera has 61,600 on clock. Thanks for the input.

Could be.... why don't you find me a reference to back up your claim?

Contrary to popular belief, Amsoil is not, nor has ever been a part of or a sister company of Amway.

Still waiting on that reference....

Thank you for contacting AMSOIL with your concerns.

Even though the names are similar, AMSOIL Inc. has NEVER been affiliated with AMWAY in any capacity. We are two totally different organizations. The name AMSOIL is based on our founder and CEO Al Amatuzio. Combine Al's last name with OIL and there you have it. AMSOIL. Again, AMSOIL has nothing to do with AMWAY, and never has.

Sincerely,

Mr. Cash,

Amway and AMSOIL do not have nor did they every have a connection.

There was a time when AMWAY offered a synthetic oil, but it was not AMSOIL, nor was it a product made by AMSOIL. Further, it was not a product manufactured by AMWAY, as it was a product that had been private labeled for them by another company.

Cash - I'm still divided concerning your use of my quote concerning Amsoil reps. In one respect I feel honored that I am quoted and yet having seen your biting wit I feel I am being mocked. Is my arrogance getting in the way of my paranoia or vice versa?

Either way I would like you to keep it up for as long as you like. Any chance to see my name in lights is a good thing.
