I saw some bad fights after my grandmother died. My aunts were ransacking her home looking for money and stuff. I was 12 and was disgusted with the whole scene. Told my mother years later not to leave me a thing, let my brothers and sisters fight over it (she probably won't have anything anyway, charge card freak)

My grandfather, a first generation American and self made man, who is a retired Col from the Army and a retired judge has put together an estate up in the 8 figures. My father and I are both only children in the family tree so when time comes, which unfortunatly it will some day, we will be managing the estate almost as a full time job. My grandfather invested damn near every dollor he earned into land, to the current tune of about 6k acres. Most of which is planned for realestate developement.

He had a great foresight for investing in a very limited resource that I am acutally scared to take on when it becomes my responsibility. Fortunatly the value of the property is on paper and not cash, so my wife, my father and I can continue to grow this for our future generations.

In the time being my wife and I are investing in our own estate (property, P-car, stocks and other investements) so that we are never reliant on something we did not earn ourselves. If the trust doesn't make it to me, I am no worse for wear.

As to the first statement, admirable.

Second statement...don't make me laugh that a P-car is an investment. Fun yes, hold its value after it depreciated out...yeah...but an investment...Nah...

Yeah so whats your point? I fully recognize that I'm a worthless piece of *****...Mother tells me that evey time I talk to her..."Why don't you do something worth while with your life Tabs," Is all I ever hear her say. Over and over again. I usually tell her I am doing something worthwhile, "I'm agravating you."

Very interesting and bet you are correct!

My Father left his estate to the three kids. After the dust settled we each had about $70k each.

The girls are older than I am and retired already so its in use. Mine is stashed away earning interest right now for when I need it...

I guess I will come clean.

Both my parents have passed on (I'll be 38 on Monday). My father went first. He left everything, house, retirement, benifits to her. I got all the cars ( the Porsche, 2Jags MK II, XJ6,and a 74 landcruiser), computers, ham radio, and some other stuff. She pissed thru some of the money, paying off here credit card dept (over 100K), and did some other things I'm not to sure of. Then, she became sick, and passed away.SO I was left with everything (being the only child). BUT, before she passed, she was suppost to sign a document showing I was the one to receive my father Cubic Corp retirement package. That didnt happen, so now I'm sure I'm going to have a hard time collecting that. I still have 6 figures, of which I have been, and will be putting into the house since they didnt really keep it up once I moved out in 86. The good thing is the house is paid off. I own it, and only pay the land tax. So no morgage.

Then last year my grandmother died. I guess since my mother passed before her, I was put in her place, and received the money from the sale of the estate (house, property in the house), as did my uncle, and 2 cousins (their father, my moms brother passed years ago). Well, my 2 cousins did the same as any other money hungy pieces of ****s would do. They wanted to go to grandma house, and raid it. They wanted my aunt (who now owns the house) to sell it, so they could get money. They would call everyday, hounding her, when are you going to get the estate appraised. This went on for months. They live out in NJ (Gma lived in the Bronx NY), while I'm here in vegas. I never called my aunt about any of it. She told me see was going to get the estate appraised, and buy our shares from us.I agreed, but still didnt call her about it. About a year later, the check was in the mail. The money was split 4 ways . Me, my two cousins, and my uncle tony. The funny part. Both of my cousins harrased the **** out of my Aunt for this, and they received Half of what I did. I thought that was great !!!!! Even said it on all of the court papers we had to sign. Sacks of ****.

BUT, let me make something very clear. Though, I appreiate that I was able to receive what I did, I still feel like ****. I would rather have my parents then any of this. I would rather be able to pick up the phone and say "Hi Grammy". Sure its nice, but such a ****ty price to pay to get it.

When my father passed away, he left us about $50k each (me, my brother and sister), plus his house that my sister now occupies, an appartment on the Leman lake and a boat. As far as I am concerned, that money is earning interrest and I try not to touch it before I retire. We sold the boat because it was not getting enough use, and I have never seen the appartment since I now live in the US.

Interesting thread. I got 1K from one grandmother, 5K from another. My folks have everything, house, cash, investments all in a living trust to be split 50/50 between my sister and I. They have already started doling out items which they want to make sure each of us get. I got my great, great grandads hunting shotgun. There is some valuable art, clocks, and antiques which will get divided up as well. Interesting part is that neither of our spouses are mentioned anywhere. I guess a couple divorces can do that. My wifes father is pretty well off and she is the only daughter. He has already basically paid for college for my 3 and 6 year old children, for which I am grateful. I would much rather spend quality time with them all then spend their money.

There are scant few episodes in life that reveal the true nature of a person more than an individuals approach to inheritance, trust funds and estate management.

Life's little litmus tests.

I have received zero, from anyone. I have put together a retirement income of over 6 figures and retired at 49 without anyone’s help, period. That said, I resent the tax situation in this country. Its communist in nature. Earn a buck and "they" get 60 percent of it. Not exactly fair by any standard. All that tax for a bunch of malcontents that deserve nothing. Some do, but most do NOT.

For what could have been.. One of my direct ancestors once owned the entire STATE of Maryland. Title was lost in a mysterious fire.

My gg grandfather was a BIG time land speculator, having bought and sold $100,000's of dollars of land back in the mid and late 1800's. All we have seen is the 50 acres my mother still owns. and she is in her 80's. Grandfather and grandmother sold their land, many hundreds of acres, to pay for cancer treatments.

A close uncle was a multi millionaire in the early 50's. He left most of his wealth to the government in inheritance tax.

One uncle was the beneficiary of a trust fund. His parent was a president of GMs Pontiac division in the 1930's. He lived a life of sin and luxury, only to lose it all due to negligence on his part.

In any case I, we have received nothing and done quite well without. With reasonable taxes we would have done much better.

I would like to add, that my donations to charity would have done much more than the money extracted from us in taxes. Long live the real USA, and a quick end to the post new deal usa.

I hope my parents live so long as to not leave me a thing. It's my turn to do things for them and pay them back for raising my sorry arse. I'm thankful for modern medicine or it wouldn't have been possible to have them over for lunch yesterday.

middle class liberal here. My folks paid for part of my college tuition. They have 7 figure net worth but live frugally and reasonably (dad still drives a 92 325i with 200k+ on it). I refuse any and all financial overtures from them. My dad grew up in a large working class/working poor family, and I am not going to disappoint him by being the mooch/leech so many people I know are to their successful parents.

None for me, but I do know a family who were the beneficiaries of a now-defunct American automotive mfg. That family has some frickin' issues. Every one of them...trust funds/large inheritances can be a bad influence...
