windows pros! efi ecu & pc arent happy, please help!

Being a lifetime mac user I am not all that savvy when it comes to using windows. I recently rebuilt my dad's engine, put in a new trans, went efi and rewired half the car. So I hookup my buddies DELL to the brain yesterday for the first time, everything is talking, wonderful I think.

My Autronic dealer sent me some base .cal files for starting the engine up for the first time before I autotune and drive it in for some dyno time.

Here I come up against a wall. I have these two files, identical info on both, one is a normal cal file and the other was sent as a .zip. Download file to the computer from my email, do the little right click to open with, choose the SM4_ECU program for tuning and I get a warning. Something like this file isnt WIN32 compatible. Try it again, unzip the zip file, open with SM4_ECU program and I get the same flag. Is there a software problem, problem with the settings in his computer not jiving with what I am trying to do or it just cant be done?

Please take mercy on a mac user and give me a little insight. If all else fails I will just program the thing manually but it would be nice to crank it over sooner than later.

Thanks to all in advance. Ryder

You are not being really specific about what you're doing here. What program are you using to unzip the file? If you're using XP, you should be able to extract the file to a location of your choice (desktop probably), then open SM4_ECU, click the file menu, click open, then point to the file.

If that doesn't work, then your installation of SM4_ECU may be corrupt. Can you open other .cal files with it? It's also a possibility that the .cal file in your email is corrupt as well. You might ask them to resend it. HTH,

ianc

just to specify a bit more. I have the SM4 software downloaded on the computer, it works, I can plug into the ECU and check my input readings from sensors. The .cal file is an engine map that will get the engine running. It was emailed to me in normal SM4 .cal file and also in a zip file. When I have the SM4 software running I try to open the map files with that software and get no dice. Its possible that the software is corrupt so I tried on another computer same thing. Either its the email itself or it just wont go.

Use Winzip to unzip it then try using it. Should be able to download a free copy from www.downloads.com or email me.

Also, what OS (W2000 or XP?) are you using on the Dell?

So that says that the modules of the program associated with communicating with the brain are OK, but no more.

Yes, you told us this. Can you open other .cal files apart from the one that was mailed to you?

You tried what on another computer? You need to be more explicit in what you're actually doing here, because I can't tell from what you've written. Just pretend we're idiots and you have to explain every little step to us.

Yes I tried it on a couple different computers. All were dells actually. I can open the .cal file that is saved on the brain no problem but havent tried other cal files simply because I didnt think this would happen.

Both computers run on windows XP. Also I was using winzip to unzip the files. Im thinking the files that I was emailed are no good at this point. I will try again tomorrow though. Nice thing is I dont have to be hooked up to the car to play with the software.

Im going to try again tomorrow on another computer and see what happens. It boils down to this, if I cant get the darn file to open with the SM4 ecu software then I am going to go ahead with manually programming it. Just a shame it hasnt worked so far but ive got my fingers crossed.

Thanks guys, ryder

Let us know (precisely) how it went. You'll want to save the email attachment to your local disk before attempting to open it with your SM4 software,

Figured it out today. Very simple mistake and should have figured it out earlier. All the files were fine, nothing was wrong with them, as usually happens it was the operator. Since Autronic is a proprietary software you have to put the cal files into its map folder which I didnt do. After that it was smooth sailing.

Cant wait to crank it now.
