Give up, You don't understand(rant)

Ok, so maybe I am a little anal, but some things just push my buttons. A co-worker of mine is clueless about cars in general, and what they mean to me, and I'm guessing most of you. He knows that I love my cars, especially the Porsche. Maybe that is why he feels the need to comment.

Besides the oddball comment here and there about how he ran his car without oil for a while, and the fact that he bought a new car 6 months ago without attempting to sell or fix the other one, and just lets it sit outside without ever moving it because it needs new "brakes" ($60 set of pads I'm sure)...there are a few things that really get to me

When I take the 911 to work on nice days he always grins and says "got the porsh today, nice"....porsh

I kid you not, twice he has asked me, "that's Italian, right?"...italian

The other day he came in from a site visit and said, "yeah, the guy had a porsh, it was a newer one, I think it was a boxer"...porsh boxer, didn't know he was still fighting

The kicker comment was about a week ago... we were going on a site visit together, he was running a little late and said, "You don't mind if I eat in your car, do you?"

"Yes." I calmly replied, thinking to myself, 'yes, I do mind if you eat your slimy double-decker pb&j in my beloved 1985, Porsche 911, Carrera Targa, you clueless mofo' you.'

ahhh, I feel better already

I had a clueless classmate like that. He would beg me everyday to give him a ride home so he would not have to walk, then as soon as he got into the car he started to tell me everything that was wrong with it...rides did'nt last long.

My coworkers good-naturedly rib me about my car...I call them classless heathens.

(They also all play D&D, WOW, etc...I don't. One of my favorite comebacks is at least I'm really doing something...instead of just pretending to do stuff.)

Some people just don't get it... and they never will.

One of my favorite bartenders, a great guy... bought a new Blazer for his wife... my first question:
"What engine did you get?"
"Uh... I don't know"

I go to pick up one of my lady friends for dinner... I own a Porsche and a Hyundai... she gets in.
"Which car is this?" They are both silver.

I don't let it bother me anymore, some people like opera, some like rap, some like modern art, some like Renaissance,, some people are into soccer, some are into football
Different strokes

Now are you sure this guy isn't pushing your buttons?

Somewhat tangential but it still makes me laugh when people look at my bike and say" BMW makes motorcycles?"

I am with you, I stopped explaining to people. Some are point A to point B people and don't give a crap about their cars (my parents are this way) and some are passionate about precision beautiful pieces of engineering as me & my older brother are. I think my brother had alot to do with my influence but as a kid my dream car was a Countach and then a Diablo and I evolved into Porsches.

I enjoy to push buttons on people if I'm in the mood. Especially at car shows. Just recently I was at a show last Saturday with mostly muscle cars. Well I know what a Corvette is and I can tell the time frame they are from.

So I walk up to this late 80s early 90s vette and the guy starts talking to me about it. He started talking about the engine and how much power it has. I asked him if it was quicker than a P-car and of course it was. So I told him that his car was sweet and since you are so into Firebirds you should check out the newer ones cause they are even faster. He didn't even try to correct me he just made a few more comments and walked away.

One of my coworkers with a Honda Oddesey likes to remind me that it has the same HP as my 951 PLUS it has 11 cup holders. I like to remind him that it's a bloated people-mover...and all those cup holders add a lot of weight.

I don't understand why any of that works you up. There are car lovers and there are appliance drivers. World's big enough for both. Save the stressful rants for things that count. Like political arguements on the OT Forum.

Maybe it's because most of my family are appliance drivers who think I'm wasting my time when I putter in the garage, but my attitude is why let it bother you?

I've been using my SC as a daily driver / work car for the last year or so. I was visiting a customer's property recently, parked in their lot, and a foreman remarked to me, "So you're the guy driving the WAY too expensive car in the lot." My old SC, parked amongst these humongous, brand new pick-up trucks, and I'm driving the way too expensive car. I pointed out to him what I paid for it and the fact that it has reached the bottom of it's depreciation curve.

No one is that clueless, especially with the sandwich in the car question. He's pushing your buttons. I would have told him that I prefer he not eat in my car (unless he was going to pay for the detailing next week).

Almost did the soda-out-the-nose thingy.

Hmmm - co-worker claiming his Oddesey MINIVAN is better than your Porsche because it has the same power PLUS 11 cup holders? Is he on crystal meth?!?

I'd like to see him take his minivan to any motorsport venue -- AX, track, drag -- whatever. It would be like a dog going to a dog fight wearing one of them cute knitted doggie-sweaters.

Horsepower (and cupholders) don't make a car better....

When it comes to our complex, passionate relationship with our beloved vintage Porsche cars - I think we are probably a very small percentage of people in general. And probably misunderstood. For the general population the marque Porsche stands for loads of money, upper class snot and show of.

There are several other hobbies, at least as expensive, that are looked upon as just that - a passionate hobby. Not so with Porsche ownership. To many 'clueless' people thats just posh.

Thats why I can share that certain feeling of 'you ignorant puts' when someone gives me that slightly patronizing smile and I just know - in his mind I am just a weak minded looser that desperately need to boost my self esteem - and have the money to do it.

They desperately try to feel sorry for us, but deep down they are only envious..

This really cracks me up... people look at my $4000 944 and give me "oh you have a Porsche, I guess you think ou are special".
Then they proceed to get in their new +$25,000 Honda/Toyota/Nissan.
Take a quick trip to the FS board and you will find a bunch of nice mid 80's SC's for around $15,000.

Our WAY too expensive cars, yeah right

well i am proud to say my last GF did know how to spell and say Porsche properly. she was more anal about her Saturn than i would have ever figured one could be. but at least she understood the fascination with autos. liked driving fast on back roads too.

seems there are a few "Blonde's" with brain cells that work...

I grew up in the woods, saying Porsche one syllable until NFS 5 came out and I heard it said Porsche. I still missay it at times, but get it right more often.

Typicly if someone asks what I drive without seeing it, I say a "modified Volkswagon", or something along those lines.

I've also had vette driver next to me go "Nice Ferrari, what kind is it?". Just after saying it, he looked down at the sides of my car with PORSCHE accross it - serious *oops* look on his face - priceless.

There are all sors of people, I try to be nice to all. The fact is, not everyone just automaticly learns things, sometimes they find out by experience. For example, until meeeting a M3 owner two years ago, I couldn't of told you much about a BMW M3.

Reminds me of the time the female singer from my college band looked at a huge bag of weed on a table and asked the guys, "How much is in that bag?!?!" One guy said "An ounce." She said, "How many eighths is that?" We all laughed in unison, "Eight." She protested, "Well, I don't know anything about metrics." Unreal!
